The 3 taboos:
โ€ข She must not travel through time
โ€ข She must not abandon her post at the door โ€ข She must never stop time or her life is forfeit

Okay, but like WHO PUTS A CHILD IN SUCH A LONLEY POSITION. Even if Pluto is the daughter of the God of time, Chronos; this just feels wrong. Even Luna refers to her as the solitary warrior and notes the saddness in her eyes.

If Neo Queen Serenity couldn’t bring herself to kill Wiseman, that makes even less sense than her being unable to kill him. We’ve already seen the senshi kill Beryl and assorted minions without hesitation. I mean, maybe it’s the difference between killing someone mid-battle and not having the death penalty, but it’s expressed in terms of Serenity’s personal feelings and I don’t know why she suddenly cares or why this is the one time they captured an enemy.

keyofjetwolf:

I KNOW. I accept the translation correction, but jesus wept, it just makes everything that much worse to me. I mean fuck, Rei awakened as Sailor Mars on one page, and was LITERALLY ALREADY KILLING JADEITE before the end of the next. The first thing she does is summon Phobos and Deimos, and the next thing she does is roast a dude alive. SHE DOESNโ€™T EVEN NEED PHOBOS AND DEIMOS TO DO IT I ASSUME SHE JUST INVITED THEM OVER TO WATCH.

Then fast-forward a thousand years, and we have Death Phantom/Wiseman who (assuming correct translation) DESTROYED THE ENTIRE CITY, killing gods only know how many people, and Neo-Queen Serenityโ€™s justย โ€œoh I donโ€™t know, I donโ€™t want to think about it, letโ€™s just send him somewhere elseโ€. I mean youโ€™d think maybe the Senshi mightโ€™ve beenย โ€œYeah, sure, leave it to usโ€ and then fucking killed the guy anyway. NQS clearly had no intention of thinking about him the second she sent him away, so how would she know?

WHICH BY THE WAY HOW INTERESTING A STORY WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN DEATH PHANTOM RETURNING FOR REVENGE AND NQS LIKEย โ€œWTF WE BANISHED YOUโ€ AND THE GIRLS LIKEย โ€œUHM YEAH ABOUT THATโ€

This keeps making me think about how irritated I was by Episode 200, though, where Usagiโ€™s just likeย โ€œOh Iโ€™m sure thisโ€™ll be fine, bye now!โ€ NO IT DOESNโ€™T WORK THAT WAY. As the only person with any power to make them stop fucking murdering โ€“ which can assume NQS must be, since the only account we get is centered around her feelings and actions โ€“ then itโ€™s AT MINIMUM her responsibility to make sure they donโ€™t do it again. If her conscience demanded she banish Wiseman, then her conscience should have fucking demanded she know where he was and what he was doing at all times. Instead, she called it job done and went for a beer.

Thatโ€™s the part Iโ€™m really struggling with. Itโ€™s so unbelievable irresponsible, and I just KNOW there wonโ€™t be any repercussions from it.

What are good resources for someone just starting to learn about Judaism (esp with a Christian background)?

keshetchai:

Sure thing!ย

First, a note on finding actually Jewish books, and not evangelical Christian ones โ€“ Reliably Jewish publishers include JPS (Jewish Publication Society), any of the major Jewish movement publishers (Reformโ€™s CCAR, or Orthodoxโ€™s OU as examples), ArtScroll, Koren. If youโ€™re not sure, double check to see if you can find it on the Jewish Book Council Website.ย

Specific text for this: What I wish My Christian Friends Knew About Judaism (Shoen)ย

Resource One – Tanakh or Torah:ย

Recommended: JPS The Jewish Study Bible*, Robert Alterโ€™s The Five Books of Moses*, or a Chumash version (like organized Torah portions and commentary), like the Stone Chumash or Etz Hayim (for example.)ย

+ Understanding Torah: Who Wrote the Bible? (Friedman) and Essential Torah (Robinson) or Biblical Literacy ย (Telushkin)ย

Resource Two – Introductory Guides:

  • Jewish Literacy (Telushkin) *ย
  • Essential Judaism (Robinson) *ย
  • Judaismโ€™s 10 Best Ideas (Green) *ย
  • The Jewish Book of Why (Kolatch)
  • Settings of Silver: An Introduction to Judaism (Wylen)

Resource Three – Theology Books:ย

  • Finding God: Selected Responses (Sonsino)*
  • What do Jews Believe?: The Spiritual Foundations of Judaism (Ariel)
  • The Sabbath (Heschel) *
  • God In Search of Man: A Philosophy of Judaism (Heschel)ย
  • I Asked For Wonder: A Spiritual Anthology (Heschel)ย

Resource Four – History:ย

  • Either of the booksย โ€œA Short History of the Jewish Peopleโ€ (or whatever that title is. Thereโ€™s two different ones. People seem to prefer the shorter of the two, with the blue cover)
  • ย The Jews, God, and History (Dimont – dated but a compelling read imo.)*
  • The Story of the Jews (Schama).ย

Above * are my personal prioritiesย

Shoah History:ย

  • The Holocaust: A New History (Rees)ย
  • Nazi Germany and The Jews (Friedlander, 2 volumes or abridged edition)
  • Denial: Holocaust History on Trial (Lipstadt)

Websites:ย

Canโ€™t go wrong with MyJewishLearning.com, honestly!ย

– For reference, there is one scholarly Jewish contextualization of the Christian New Testament. It is NOT an evangelizing text – it is a scholarโ€™s commentary. This book is published by Oxford University Press, and is called The Jewish Annotated New Testament. Jewish scholars and scholars of Judaism annotated/commentated the NT in Jewish historical/cultural perspective.ย
