Itâs the most ironic of morning weather forecasts: âWatch out for black ice on your morning commute.â You canât watch out for black ice, Mr. Meteorologist. Itâs nearly impossible to see. It often disguises itself as an innocent puddle of water on the road, luring innocent drivers into complacency. Then they drive across it at speed, lose all traction and spin straight off the side off a cliff. The car tumbles end over end to the bottom of a deep ravine, where it explodes into a ball of flame at least six stories high. But wait! The driver is hanging on to the side of the cliff by his fingertips!
Knowing how to react (or not react, as the case may be) when you drive across a patch of black ice is practical; but if youâve ever wondered what this stuff is, how it forms, and what makes it so dangerous, weâre here to help.

‘Either you give them willingly or i will take them by force.â
‘Bring Frost a supply crate from the underground. and if only he is to remain after exchangeâtake him down.â

‘North only recognises my existence when i become a threat to him or his company. other than those times, we often leave each other alone. it took many assaults like this one for supplies before the Great Nicholas St. North showed himself to me, though. Usually his yetis did all the work.â

TOOTHIANA – The Emerald Diamond
–
‘I heard about what you did at the North Pole, Jack.â
‘my name⊠is KING.â
‘yes⊠of course it is. iâm sorry.â Tooth replied unevenly.
‘if i may ask? what do you need these medicinal herbs for? is someone you know sick?â Her worry was legitimate.
King turned on his heel, ââYou have my thanks for the parcel.â
‘All this could end. You could be something more.â Tooth pleaded.

‘Toothiana will house me occasionally when i travel. she has never asked for anything in return. But she is usually too busy with her work to play hostess for long. i suspect she tells the others about me after the visits.â

SANDMANÂ – The Golden Orb
–
–
‘i learned early after the Burgess battle that Sandman had been the ultimate downfall of the Nightmare King. The fact that this little guy could bring down someone as strong as the Nightmare King makes me very afraid him. i donât want to find out what he could do to someone like me. so i usually avoid him at all costs.â
–
BUNNYMUND – The Lavender Triad
–
‘and iâm none too partial to thieves.â
‘i didnât steal these supplies. he gave them to me.â King replied tonelessly.
‘So he did.â Bunnymund nodded, ‘but you and i both know you didnât just walk up and ask all willy nilly.â
King didnât flinch under the scrutiny. ‘i only seek to pass through your gates. iâm not in search for a fight.â
‘Now just why should i let you leave my territory without taking back what you stole?â
–
‘Bunnymund and i donât get along and havenât since the Easter of 1968. usually i stay out of his way and he stays out of mine. the only time i get too close is when i need to make use of his tunnel gatesâwhich he is always reluctant for me to use.â

NIGHTMARE KING – The Black Formless
–
‘still feverishâŠ..â
‘Do not worry, Nightmare King, i have returned with medicine and other supplies. It will be okayâyou will be okayâŠâ
‘please⊠just please⊠do not go gentle into that goodnight.â
âpleaseâŠâ

‘The Nightmare King had fallen ill during a harsh winter. Sparrow had alerted me and led me to his dwellings. and from that moment i did everything in my power to make sure that he would see spring. everything i couldâŠfor my friend.â
[iâve been waiting for this question haha! XD] [related to this post: X]
âmy coat and sweater came around the holidays some years ago. Sparrow had been gone for a few weeks and when he returnedâŠâ
‘itâs common for Sparrow to bring me gifts from his long travels. sometimes itâs medicine. other times it âs random trinkets and stolen watches. this was the first letter, however.â
‘well, thereâs a first for everything, i suppose.â
‘a gift?? no one had ever sent me a christmas gift before. naturally i was curious to what kind of gift the Nightmare King would send.â
‘it looked freshly tailored. like new hems had been put into place.â
‘iâm not sure how one goes about turning literal shadows into knit-able thread, but i wasnât complaining. it was badass.â
‘and i was happy.â
‘really happy.â
‘admittedly, it took me a moment to realiseâŠâ
ââŠthis was no ordinary gift. it was the Nightmare Kingâs way of saying that he⊠accepted me as his equal.
‘and that was⊠a huge deal to me. because never before had someone accepted me as an equal. i was Jack Frost the weather phenom. Jack Frost the wintery snowjob. Jack Frost the seasonal annoyance. but nowânowâi was a king. the King Frost.â
King looked to the Nightmare King. he sworn that he hadnât been there a moment before. but suddenly feeling a bit safer, King whispered, âfrom Sandman. heâs been following me with that dreamsand of his for days.â
âoh? yes he does that.â the Nightmare King said bitterly. then, âare you afraid?â the question was genuine as if the King of Fear did not know.
‘âŠyes.â King hesitantly admitted.
Pitch nodded. âi see. here, let me show you a neat trick.â the Nightmare King offered.
the Nightmare King lead his hand towards the soft glow of the dreamsand. âit wonât hurt you, King.â he said reassuringly to Kingâs tremble.
‘but⊠how??â King gasped as the dreamsand fell dull and black around them.
‘that jumper is made from my shadows.â the Nightmare King supplied. ‘wearing it, you have use of them. only you.â
‘from now on, my lord, whenever you feel afraid, or angry, or upset, you only need that jumper to handle the rest. Dreamsand or otherwise will not stand in your way⊠for what goes better than cold and dark?â
â-
‘i suppose im under constant influence of shadows which also includes nightmare sand, if that answers your question.â
King thought back on that. âQueen Toothiana was the first to see me in my sweater after i had received it. it had been a few months and we had only crossed paths due to the fact that i happened to be traveling by and needed a place to rest in the east. She seemed taken by it at first, telling me that it was fitting in a way that suited my new demeanour. I enjoyed the compliment and had yet to tell her where it had come from when she reached outâsigh, i can still see her hand nowâand suddenly she chirped, a painful screech and her eyes went as wide as they could, a look of hurt strewn about her with her feathers in full form of wary.
ââshadowsâ, she had said in a whisper as if the idea was as distasteful as evil itself. she had looked at me as though surprised. clearly she knew before anyone else that my company had taken to the shadows but the way she looked at me thenâthe way her eyes begged for it not to be trueâi could hardly stand it. so,â he breathed, ‘i left. knowing that she would tell the others. knowing that they too would show the same fear in their eyes. knowing that they would not understand.â
King grasped his shoulders, feeling the shadows beneath his grip and giving a soft moan to its comfort and protection, as if the feeling was an orgasmic experience. ‘how dare they judge me.â
