raphael in a male vessel was male. raphael in a female vessel was male. raphael in no vessel at all would be male. hannah in a female vessel was female. hannah in a male vessel was female. hannah in no vessel at all would be female. cas in a male vessel is male. cas in a female vessel is male. cas in no vessel at all would be male.
how the fuck does this fandom get “the angels are genderfluid” from the angels being able to use both men and women as vessels when their gender—not the gender of the human vessels they’re using, but their gender as an angel—stays the fucking same.
The angels also call each other “brother” and “sister” as an honorific. If they don’t have gender, why would they call one another that? Their use of either “brother” or “sister” for one another has nothing to do with the sex of their human vessels, as angels don’t even see one another as their vessel form! They just use vessels to interact with humans who can’t look at them without having their eyeballs melted. Angels can perceive one another’s magnificent and terrifying trueforms according to Zachariah. We (the audience) simply see them on screen in heaven in their vessels, because it’s easier to do that than to show a bunch of clouds talking to each other, and because the CW doesn’t have a CGI budget to show what angels look like to one another (giants with a bunch of animal heads, apparently).
I’ve seen some fans use zey/zem or whatever, special pronouns when talking about Cas, and I think it’s absurd. He clearly conceptualizes himself as a male, even if he inhabited a female vessel briefly one hundred or so years ago. The same way Raphael is called “he” and “brother” even though he once inhabited a female vessel.
I’m pretty sure this will be my all time favorite gif-set to ever exist. I just love that first clip. Misha’s acting in that part is brilliant. You can literally see Cas’ love for Earth.
