i love cherokee hair tampons so much but there is an exceptionally untapped well of stankyle angst surrounding it considering kyle could very well die before he’s even thirty

thirty honestly was a tad bit premature for the sake of being dramatic but not that crazy

so kyle gets a kidney transplant at eight years old. transplants don’t last forever; the average lifespan for a kidney depends on the donor – if they’re a living relative it’s about fifteen years, twelve for a deceased donor, and an unrelated but living donor is somewhere between the two. be generous and say kyle’s kidney lasts him fourteen for an even number. that would mean sometime in kyle’s early twenties his transplanted kidney would begin to fail

now, in the episode, the doctor tells stan that he wouldn’t be able to give kyle his kidney b/c they don’t share the same blood type, and the only person who shares kyle’s blood type (ab negative) is cartman, which is why they need one of his kidneys. when i was thinking about this like a year ago i was under the impression that this was true, but it actually isn’t; not only does the rh factor (the presence/lack thereof of an antigen that designates someone’s blood positive or negative) not matter in transplants, ab blood is actually a universal recipient. they can receive an organ from anyone. so stan very well could donate one of his kidneys to kyle (as could ike, theoretically, or any member of kyle’s family as an immediate consideration) though this doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a very compatible match

but! let’s follow the show’s logic to make this even more difficult. say that stan is an incompatible donor and that a kidney donor needs to be an exact match in blood type save for universal donors – that would mean kyle could only receive a kidney from other ab negative donors or an o negative one. less than one percent of the population has ab negative blood, and about 6.6 percent of people have o negative. that is not a large margin of compatibility

there’s a lot of factors that go into someone’s priority for organ donation. kidneys are by far in the highest demand and in low supply relative to this. at any given time there are over 100,000 people in the u.s. alone on the kidney transplant wait list. the average wait time is somewhere between 3-10 years depending on the region and people die every day waiting; some people become too sick to be eligible for donation during the wait. children obviously get first priority. there’s also the matter of if someone has previously received a donation and antibodies present in your body – these make it much more difficult to match w a donor; immunocompromised people also have a much harder time since their bodies have increased difficulty fighting infections and are more likely to suffer complications transplant rejections. the physical matching – meaning, how closely the donor’s organ would fit in the recipients considering their body size – is another issue. there’s a lot more that goes into it but these are some major ones

so given how these apply to kyle, he could have a pretty difficult time finding a second kidney. and he could become too sick to receive one during the wait should he even be matched w a potential donor

the average span of time someone can live on dialysis is 5-10 yrs. dialysis doesn’t not work, but some people can become unable to tolerate the treatment depending on the severity of their condition. a lot of people decide to stop their dialysis treatment as they feel it does more to denigrate their quality of life than improve it, and go on to choose palliative care instead in anticipation for the end of their livesĀ

tl;dr kyle might not have such a long and fruitful life

Nooo…. This is not the kind of content I want on my dash. THS IS NOT OKAY.

LET MY BOY LIVE AND BE HAPPY DAMMIT 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

some writer snob somewhere: Do not start sentences with But or And because doing so is grammatically incorrect.

me, writing my fic: But I don’t care. And you can’t stop me.

Sometimes…..the flow of your creative prose…..is more important….than grammatical guidelines,,,,,,

im taking syntax. that rule is old, outdated, and frankly perscripitivist. it is perfectly acceptable to start sentences with but or and, so long as it makes sense, and doesnt break any grammatical rules. which you will know when you read the sentence and it doesnt sound write. you intuitively know your own languages grammar, your English teacher was a prescriptivest, a perscriptivests can fuck off.

Honestly this is why I work 3rd shift happily.

My BiL is a neurologist who has done a lot of sleep research and one of his favorite areas of study is circadian rhythms. He says that being a night owl is real, it is predicated on the genetic structure of the brain, it is not just ā€œlaziness,ā€ and it is not a disorder. He hypothesizes that its original evolutionary purpose was basically to produce night watchmen—people who can stay awake and alert at night to protect the domicile while the early birds sleep.

So we’re not lazy, night owls; we’re the fucking late shift lookouts. Gonna grab my torch and patrol the perimeter if anyone would like to join me.

thank u night shift lookouts!

A natural needle

Is it the dark tower, an ancient skyscraper, a giant finger, the tower of Mordor or a monolith? Although it looks like the perfect setting for a fantasy trilogy, this place is for real. Pico Cão Grande (a.k.a. the great dog peak, the reason behind this is unclear) is a volcanic landform known as a volcanic plug or needle on the island of São Tomé in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of Africa. A volcanic plug is created when magma hardens in a volcanic vent and is trapped. With active volcanoes plugs can cause extreme built up of pressure leading to a very explosive eruption. However, if this does not happen erosion removes the surrounding rock and only the plug of lava is exposed. Pico Cão Grande rises a mere 300m, its peak is 663m high. Nearby another volcanic plug called Pico Cão Pequeno, as the name suggests, is not as high or impressive.

Senegal is home to Lake Retba aka Lac Rose, which is naturally pink. Due to its high salinity, the water has the optimum living conditions for a micro-algae called dunaliella salina. These organisms contain an abundance of β-Carotene, a red coloured organic compound, which is utilised to absorb light for ATP production. The presence of these organisms is what gives the lake its pink hue, which is most prominent in the dry season.

Could too-tight jeans land you in the hospital?

Skinny jeans could leave you weak in the knees, literally.

One woman was hospitalized for days after her jeans caused her to lose feeling in her legs, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.

The study said that squatting in skinny jeans can damage nerves and muscles in the legs. The
35-year-old woman had spent her day helping a relative move, squatting
for hours as she emptied closets. When she was walking home that night,
her feet grew numb, and she tripped and fell. Immobilized, she spent
hours on the ground before she was found and rushed to the hospital. ā€œWe
blame what happened on a combination of prolonged squatting for hours
and the tight jeans she was wearing,ā€ said Dr. Thomas Kimber who treated
the patient. Doctors were forced to cut the jeans off her calves because they had become so swollen.

ā€œNormally
muscles can expand to compensate for swelling, but there was a
tourniquet effect, so the muscles had to expand inwards and compressed
blood vessels and nerves,ā€ said Kimber.Ā

She lost circulation in her lower legs and couldn’t move her ankles or toes properly, according to the study.

ā€œIf
she hadn’t been able to come to the hospital, the compression could
have gone on longer and caused residual nerve damage,ā€ said Kimber, who
is an associate professor at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia. After four days on an IV, she could walk again and was released from the hospital.

So if you don’t want to be a fashion victim, think twice before wiggling into a too-tight pair of skinny jeans.
