Birds & bats that die in Lake Natron, Tanzania, become solidified due to large amounts of salt & soda in the waters.Photos: Nick Brandt

Wow! Crazy amazing!

Lake Natron is hot [60 degrees C / 140 F] and extremely alkaline, due to high amounts of the chemical natron (a mix of sodium carbonate and baking soda) in the water. The water’s pH has been measured as high as 10.5—nearly as high as ammonia. The photographer paid locals to collect the calcified birds/animals and posed them for his series “The Calcified” which featured in

Hi! Have you heard of aphantasia?

tobeagenius:

Not until now but whoah
heres a link for anyone that wants to read more about it.

The majority of us can conjure mental images up in our heads at will. If I told you to think of something you might see regularly; such as your mum or even if I told you to picture something that you’ve never seen; for example an ostrich in roller skates- you’d have a pretty clear mental image. HOWEVER, people with aphantasia are not able to visualise these mental images.

One person included in the article described his experience: “My stepfather, when I couldn’t sleep, told me to count sheep, and when he explained what he meant, I tried to do it and I couldn’t,” he says.“I couldn’t see any sheep jumping over fences, there was nothing to count.”

So pretty wild stuff really.. you can take a test to determine how weak or strong your ability to visualise mental images is. Take the test

This is what 100,000 volts of electricity running through ballistic gel looks like. (Source)

Wow, how captivating. Look at that unexpected reaction. I can’t believe how violently it moves around.

fun fact that most of you probably know: balistic gel is made to have similar properties to human flesh, so that when testing with ballistics(hence the name) they know that a very similar thing will occur with the human body. in other words, this is a very good example as to why you shouldn’t fuck with electricity

Dark/black shouldn’t always be associated with evil or bad things. In Egypt and Islam, black is a positive color. For desert cultures, black would have been the color of fertile soil and the cooler, more comfortable nights, while white was the color of infertile sand and harsh sunlight. Shade, shelter, and darkness were important and valued for protection from the sun and sand. Clouds that darkened the sky brought life giving rain

What is even more ironic is that the white wedding dress has nothing to do with the virginal or pure state of the bride.  It is nothing more than a fashion trend that began 175 years ago, when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert.  She wore a white dress as a means to show that she was a “simple” woman who was getting married.  And she wanted a dress to match some lace she had purchased.

You can order a shirt here

Fun Fact: when a Moroccan woman covers herself in white from head to toe it probably means that she has just been widowed and is grieving over her husband. It’s not really a happy color.

WORD OF THE DAY:

perspicacious

(pərspəˈkāSHəs), adjective |

  • Perspicacious is defined as possessing a mental perception, generally, higher than others; meaning your empathy is composed in an intellectual level as opposed to using your full emotional capacity. Deeply insightful and intelligent,
  • a perspicacious person has an understanding of things’ and people’s mechanisms, which are not immediately obvious. In other words, they have good judgement, which propels others to view them as wise individuals.

Seven Colored Earths is a geological formation of small sand dunes which are consisted of differently colored sand. The most interesting and most astonishing fact is that the differently colored sands settle in layers spontaneously. This happens even if you take small amounts of those sands and mix them in your hand. They will go into a separate into layered spectrum. Scientists believe that this unusual natural phenomena has emerged as consequence of cooling volcanic rocks at different temperatures. But the fact that the sands spontaneously separate into layers hasn’t been explained yet. This is located in Mauritius Island. (Source)

I wish more people got this because some ‘low-empathy’ people are the most compassionate and sympathetic in the universe, and I hate it when that’s taken to mean ‘unfeeling and probably hostile’ when nothing could be further from the truth

Or, as my dad put it,

Sympathy: I know how you feel
Empathy: I feel how you feel
Compassion: is there anything I can do to help?

Fire whirls also known as fire tornados are created by hot, dry air rising rapidly from the ground. In that sense, they have more in common with whirlwinds or “dust devils,” which typically form on hot, sunny days when the ground heats up the air nearby. They only last a few minutes and can burn out quickly, however they can be very dangerous. Temperatures can reach 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,093 degrees Celsius) in a fire tornado. They can also spread fires across a wide area. (Source)

cryptid-wendigo:

My advice for people that think their location has few or no cryptids:

– Look into lesser known things. Not all Cryptozoological wonders are well known, the most interesting ones are sometimes not known outside a certain area!

– Look in your local library at old newspaper articles or ask around for local stories of “monsters” and “urban legends”. A lot of times people don’t know the difference between Cryptozoology and Urban Legends and might mix them up.

– Don’t dismiss some cryptids just because they are not interesting. Was there a mystery animal (ex. A hyena was spotted in Cape Cod long ago) in your area that doesn’t belong there? That’s still a cryptid. There are still many questions to be asked about that sighting.

– Can’t find much information on a lesser known creature? Dig dig dig! There’s probably some information out there. Sometimes there isn’t. When I found out about the aforementioned hyena, there was only a single poem from the time that seemingly was mocking the event.

– Washed up dead “thing” where you live? That’s still a cryptid – it’s called a Globster!

Using these things, I went from knowing about 1 Cryptozoological mystery in Massachusetts to knowing about 15.

and ffs, stop using google. Do your searches with DuckDuckgo.Com

They don’t filter, censor, redirect, block or save your searches. They aren’t funneling you to money making sites, they don’t take bribes from sites to be “listed in the top ten”, They don’t collect data on you. With DuckDuckGO, you get more results, and they’re better results.
