OK, we’re actually gonna address this piece by piece here since it’s long.
Truth be told, we actually do get a lot more information than people think we do. It’s just not specific. For example, Goku’s choice to stay on Yardrat was strongly implied to be an effort by him to learn to fully control his newfound strength before he returned, as illustrated in this panel here.
A simple pat on the back was enough to send Chi-Chi through a wall and Goku scrambling after her to tend to any injuries and apologize profusely. From that, as well as his ability to not only transform at will but to take a guy who just beat Freeza even more easily than he himself did by using a single finger, simple logic dictates that’s probably a good part of why he stayed on Yardrat: to hone his power. So in that sense, a lot of this is actually the fandom simply being unable to grasp what’s in the series.
This is true, but again, it’s clearly communicated yet the fans do not grasp it. They also will then often turn to Toyotaro’s manga (which Toriyama himself is disregarding in his current writing) to reinforce their bias as Toyotaro shares that bias and even went out of his way to very specifically write it into the dialogue. (But remember, Goku is totally his favorite character).
Ok, this is actually not entirely true. In fact, it’s simply not. Next to nobody assumes Vegeta and Bulma have no connection; rather, the majority of the fanbase way, way overestimated and overstated that connection to a very high level even when there really was none in the series. When Bulma had baby Trunks, for example, she genuinely could not stand Vegeta, and Vegeta was perfectly willing to let her and their son die to chase Gero and prove himself “superior”. That bond didn’t come til much later (and frankly could be argued to be in direct response to fan demand and expectation more than anything else). Much of the others, including Vegeta and Bulma to a point, was Toriyama simply putting his visions he’d had off-paper into the series proper, with 17 becoming a ranger, 18 and Krillin having a very loving and normal household, etc.Â
That being said, Krillin and 18 actually had a pretty healthy amount of interaction in the manga, especially given their supporting roles by the Buu arc, and they were shown to care for each other very much, with 18 very specifically telling Krillin to get back to her immediately if he was in danger. Before that, in the Cell arc, there was quite a bit as well. Goku and Chi-Chi have also had a good bit of interaction in the manga, much of it positive except where played for blatant comedy.
And not to bag on Videl and Gohan, but their “romantic” interactions are hardly fleshed out. She goes from trying to expose his alter ego and barely giving him the time of day, to suddenly crushing on him as she blackmails him, and vice versa. It’s a very very SUB subplot, as was most of the romance in the series. It’s just also one that’s based on a very common trope in both Eastern and Western media, so readers and viewers are much more easily able to fill in the proverbial blanks for them.
Yeah I agree with everything you say. He’s her man whether people like it or not but im used to it. People in fandoms hate pretty much everyone whos “ugly”. Yellowtail from SU, Brienne from GoT, they say because shes not traditionally pretty she should be a lebian, They call Kylo AND his actor ugly. People suck because they only see beauty and beauty alone. Like the last hate anon who wanted 18 to become a pedophile just because she said the two underaged kids were hotter than Krillin.. That’s why Krillin has a love interest, because he actually has a great personality and thats why 18 stay satisfied. She didn’t want anyone but Krillin.
I mean, do people recall that she actually had someone traditionally considered VERY handsome, with a ton of fangirls, hit on her in the past? Asked her to go to dinner with him. Her response?
She didn’t even give him the respect of looking his direction before burning his ass and sending him flying.
She’s happy with her family, she loves them dearly. She’s very supportive, protective, and even possessive of her husband, gets jealous at the thought of him showing interest in another woman. You don’t do that over someone you “settled” for.
People need to get over it.Â
AH, and let us not forget:
You certainly don’t make hearts in your husband’s coffee if you’re just going through the motions.
Those two are still in the “newlyweds phase” all these years later and it’s precious.
This is so sweet and amazing and just the look of genuine relief on her face when she saw he wasn’t mad or didn’t hate her for it… lot of emotions in this scene.
And that look of genuine relief and happiness…
You can SEE the love in that smile. It’s adorable and such a pretty smile to boot. 🙂
(Also hey, free new avi for someone. lol)
So pure. So sweet. How anyone can say 18 does not love her husband is beyond me
Everyone is like “this is 100% Vegeta’s fault” when Cell reaches his perfect form, and in reality it’s only about 30% his fault. Everyone /knows/ Vegeta has pride. We all /know/ this. Trunks was dealing with that and launched Vegeta well out of the way of the fight. It was entirely Krillin’s fault for not destroying the android and smashing the inhibitor remote instead. Vegeta’s pride got in the way, but so did Krillin’s dick, except everyone is mad at Vegeta for being Vegeta, and no one gets mad at Krillin for getting a boner in the middle of a fight. #dbz #dragonballz #futuretrunks #vegeta #krillin
Okay if we’re talking none Cell characters Vegeta gets 94% of the blame, not because his actions lead to the creation of perfect cell, if that was the case everyone in the series can get some blame, but because he did it intentionally. Krillin was trying to spare an innocent women who got kidnapped and experimented on by some crazy fucker, I’ll give Trunks 4% for holding back against Vegeta and the entirety of the Z Warriors 2% for not taking Bulma’s advice and killing Gero before he created the androids.
Fuck off. Krillin could have stopped it all but got a boner at an awkward time and couldn’t. Trunks was there to police Vegeta because EVERYONE KNEW Vegeta was Vegeta and would want to fight the best fight possible. And Trunks blasted Vegeta the fuck outa there. Everyone was doing their part except Krillin. So once again, fuck off.
Everyone knows Vegeta has Pride. Literally no one expected Vegeta to outright stop short of killing the thing and literally, actively HELP him attain his Perfect form just to prove he could kill even that.Â
Krillin’s decision was also influenced by a desire to, you know, not kill someone for circumstances beyond their control when they’d done nothing to deserve it, especially when there were TWO guys who could ahve easily curbstomped him out there fighting him.
And again, Krillin also helped 17 and 16 independent of anything to do with his “boner” so I mean… yeah, pretty much mostly Vegeta’s fault.
It’s so annoying how people always say Krillin is to blame for having a ‘boner’. He fell in love with Android 18, but it’s also true that she shouldn’t have to suffer and die because of some mad scientist kidnapping her, who she clearly states to hate because of that fact. Those circumstances were completely unfair and out of her control. Krillin’s decision was risky, but he did it with a pure heart and good intentions. It was never about wanting to get ‘laid’, but giving an innocent woman a chance at a free life.
They were humans to start. Converted to cyborgs and called androids due to wonky translations.
But they were awoken when Trunks was an infant and looked like teenagers (as we see in the primary timeline) and Trunks, having traveled 20 years into the past to warn Goku about them, he describes them as young teenagers and warns to not be deceived by their youthful appearances bc they are killers. Meaning, after 20 years of activity, while Trunks is fighting them in the future, they are still physically teenagers and that is how he -a teenager himself- describes them.
Meaning they do not age.
Meaning they are teenagers.
Emotionally they might age.
Intellectually they might age.
Physically is canon that they do not.
In History of Trunks, tho non-canon, 18 is angered when Trunks cuts her hair bc “that doesn’t grow back, you punk” implying they don’t physically change at all. But that special isn’t canon, and if 18 can carry a child in her womb, I’m going to assume she can grow hair.
But whatever process that made her a cyborg, interferes with her ability to age.
That’s why I find KrillinX18 gross. Not only is it just a random crack ship that comes out of no where (develop a crush on the woman who literally just tried to murder you and your friends on the side of the highway bc she kissed you on the cheek? Ok?) but it’s a pairing of what essentially is a grown man with his sex-bot GF.
I find that icky.
Finally someone who shares the same opinion as I do about Krillin/18
Hi there. I’m here to explain to you why, canonically, none of this is a valid complaint.
1. The Androids are described as “young”. That’s it. If they’re teens, they’re in their late teens. So idk where this idea to depict them as “young teens” comes from, as though they’re 15 years of age.
2. You admit that, in the first place, your basis for this idea is non-canon. You’re sourcing a TV special as your reason for claiming the Androids never age, or regrow hair, or etc. On top of that, the “that doesn’t grow back” line was dub only. But FURTHER than this…
2. The Androids do canonically age. Certainly mentally, maturity-wise. But also physically.
“By the way, though they don’t need to eat, they do need to hydrate. Also, their cells deteriorate slowly, so they age slowly too.
“ – Akira Toriyama, Q&A Section, Dragon Ball Full Color: Artificial Humans & Cell Arc Volume #06 (02 May 2014)
17 and 18 do, in fact, age. They just do so more slowly, at least physically. So that’s moot.
But to further go in a bit here: Krillin and 18′s relationship does not, in fact, come out of “nowhere”. Nor is it a “crack ship” if it is, in fact, canon. But I’m going to show you why it’s not.
Their relationship is actually seeded better than most any in this series, and hinted at throughout the entire arc. Yes, Krillin is infatuated with her because of a kiss. But he also notices something Kami himself noted; namely, they never actually attacked or killed anyone. They deliberately spared them all, even Vegeta, despite him picking the fight with them. In fact, they didn’t even want a fight at all; the sole reason they were even planning to help 16 with his mission to kill Goku was just to get it over with so the three of them could get on with their lives and do whatever they wanted.
But the thing is, Krillin doesn’t want to just help her. He actively seeks to help both 16…
…and 17 too.
And why does he do that again?
So to reiterate: Yes, he’s infatuated with her. But he did all this for her without expecting a single thing to come of it. He was sure that someone like her had to have a boyfriend, that the guy she was with was probably it, and he accepted the probability there couldn’t ever be anything between them. Hell, he made the wish there without even knowing she was around.
This, however, does have an affect on her, knowing that he was willing to help them like that without expecting any sort of compensation or gratitude for it. And she is the one who seeks him out, and they become friends, until his kind-hearted and straightforward, honest nature stole her heart, as explained by Toriyama himself.
How did Kuririn and No. 18 end up getting married? “There was a lot that happened during those seven years. For No. 18, Kuririn was a type of person she’d never met before: earnest and straightforward. Little by little, she was drawn in by that. In my mind, their love story is pretty well-established… “ -Akira Toriyama, “Akira Toriyama Brings You: Secret Stories of the Dragon Ball Characters”, Daizenshuu Vol. 7 (1995)
So no, their relationship does not “come out of nowhere”, it’s not a crack ship, and it is, in fact, a healthy, loving, realistic relationship.Â
With not even a teensy trace of “icky”.
OH YEAH There’s also that “Official Age Chart” that actually says 18 and 17 are anywhere from 1 to 6 years OLDER than Krillin, so… make of that what you will.
