When someone talks shit about your friends online.

Literally me

I’ve said it before but I loved this part. I love how Goku’s attitude was just “Somebody said shit to my friend so I’m going to fuck them up.” I just found it so cute!! And Piccolo’s reaction of shitting himself and trying to calm Goku down was hilarious lol 😂

the panel where Frieda remembers Bardock specifically “resisting to the very end” in the original manga resembles the Bardock special much closer than Minus, where he never encounters Bardock at all and where Bardock doesn’t resist him at all. I don’t understand why anyone would want Minus to be canonical since it’s really just Superman’s backstory reskinned lol

dragon-ball-meta:

Hoo boy. Got a three-part mini-rant in my inbox.

Aight, here we go, Minus Whiner Masterpost time.

The panel seen in the manga in no way contradicts what’s seen in Minus at all. In point of fact, Bardock sent little Goku off the same night he returned. That same day also saw Freeza say he was waiting “no more than a month” before destroying Planet Vegeta. Meaning the planet went boom almost a month AFTER Goku left.

As for the “Superman’s Backstory” bit
hoo boy. More on that in a second.

“also Bardock only started caring about Hoku when he realized that Goku would avenge him and the Saiyans by confronting Frieza. Bardock was just a typical Saiyan who only cared about power instead of being a complete anomaly because of his wife who’s a complete anomaly for no reason.”

Bardock started mysteriously caring about Goku before even that. Bardock never even saw the vision of Goku facing Freeza until he was caught in the final blast, and yet before even that he cared to “change Kakarot’s fate”. Why? Dunno. Presumably just did because the planet was gonna go boom.

Bardock was not at all a “complete anomaly” on Planet Vegeta. He was still a soldier. He still cared about Battle, thirsted for it, still killed on Freeza’s orders. The only area in which Bardock was truly an anomaly was that he cared for his mate and stayed with her. Most Saiyans never really got attached or formed a romantic familial bond. Bardock was one of the rare who did, and with one of the Outcaste Saiyans who had a distaste for battle or harming others. As such, her life was menial. That’s
actually fleshing out a character. Not anything more or less. No less brutal than his brethren, just simply fell in love with a female as opposed to breeding. It wasn’t common, but it also wasn’t “oh my gosh this is as legendary as the Super Saiyan” either.

And he cared for his sons as an extension of that, which is
pretty simple. And even then, it wasn’t like he gushed over them or played catch. Hell, Gine even notes it’s not like him to actually fret over them when he immediately asks how Kakarot is.

“with the Bardock special, Goku is sent to Earth to destroy it, but ends up being the savior of Earth. in Minus, he’s sent there to prosper which is
exactly what he does. not as satisfying and not worth a retcon.”

Not exactly an accurate assessment. Goku never becomes its “savior” per se. But that actually contains a bit of a flaw in the special that Minus specifically fixes.

Newborns. Cannot. Defend. Themselves.

Based on the Special, Saiyans literally sent their weakest children as newborn infants to go wipe out a “weak planet”, but
why? And how would they do it? Would turning into an Oozaru magically give them intellect above that of their newborn infant selves? Would they be able to walk, fight, channel energy? And how would they even stay alive until that full moon came to even take that form? What stops him from being attacked and eaten by some predator, or if he landed in a frigid zone or river? What happens if the weather doesn’t allow a view of the moon the night it’s full?

Minus fixes that via a few tweaks. It actually shows that the babies are placed in incubation pods and fed nutrients to allow them to grow strong, and grow rapidly. They learn a bit on how to fight, they come out knowing how to walk, they’re sent with armor to protect them until that full moon presumably comes. It actually makes sense that they could conceivably survive long enough for that to be a thing.

And as for this claim that he’s like Superman in Minus, that he was sent there to prosper
 not exactly true either.

In Minus, Goku was sent to Earth to hide him and potentially recover him should Freeza not destroy the planet. It’s actually a fairly common trope in several mythologies and tales. But as for being close to Superman
the Bardock special is actually literally that, just an inverse.
Sent to be a Savior = Sent to be a Destroyer
Sent to thrive and prosper = Sent to pillage and conquer
Sent by his parents in defiance of the rulers of their planet just before a planet was destroyed by a great cataclysm = Sent by the rulers of the planet themselves before the planet was destroyed by an unforeseen attack.

Hell, in both cases, it involves the titular character’s fathers having foreseen their world’s destruction and trying to warn everyone only to be laughed at and dismissed as crazy.

But again, Minus didn’t retcon anything because:
The Bardock Special Was Never Canon.

You did? I thought it destroyed a lot of the pathos behind Goku’s character. It made him “special” – he’s good because his dad and mom are “special good saiyans” not because of a bump on the head and just… happening to end up that way. I hate blood connection shit like that. He’s now just… superman. At least he still seems to be a low class warrior, so his underdog part is still there. But I’m curious about your perspective of why you loved it.

dragon-ball-meta:

Oh no, it doesn’t do that at all really.

Bardock is in no way a “good Saiyan”. He’s still a loyal soldier, he still goes on his missions, takes part in the wholesale slaughter of people. Gine may not have a stomach for combat or much skill at it, but she too is loyal to the Empire she serves. (Her addition was also pleasant. :D)

Goku also still arrives on Earth with a very aggressive streak that IS still only removed by that blow to the head. You’ll recall, both of them gave birth to Raditz as well, and he was anything but “good”. Personality is not something that inherently carries over, though certain traits can
which may also explain Gohan’s distaste for fighting despite his Saiyan blood and having a mother who was also a martial artist. Something he inherited from his grandmother.

I liked it though simply because it removed the sorta-ridiculous need for Bardock to mysteriously be given the ability to see the future via a blow to the back of his head. It gave use a peek at Saiyan society and how they go about raising children, keeping them in an incubator to sustain and strengthen them until they’re ready.

It also explains why Goku, Vegeta, Raditz, etc. would be the only ones left out there and no word ever got back to Planet Vegeta: Freeza realistically could not, would not, waste time sending hit squads out after every Saiyan on a mission and risk a survivor. He ordered them all back home for a meeting and THEN nuked them, with Goku only surviving off his father’s gut instinct, and the others because they defied their orders to return.

To me, these bits of information make a lot more sense AND are more interesting. Also makes Goku and Freeza’s encounter seem a lot more chance than destiny, and thus Freeza even more culpable in his own demise.

That’s why I like it as much as I do, and why I think I’ll like this upcoming movie more than not. There’s a good deal of fanservice, sure, but there’s also some established universe expansion going on for the first real time In a DB movie.

See that’s the problem. Toriyama’s manga shows him confront Frieza, like it did in the Bardock special. But in Minus he’s down on planet Vegeta and we’re given no indication that he’s going to fly out into space to confront Frieza, he’s just standing there with Gine.

dragon-ball-meta:

That’s because there’s still a bit of time before that happens. When Bardock arrives home, Freeza specifically states he’s waiting no more than one month. Goku was sent out that same night.

I think the *lack of info* is responsible for a lot of negative takes as much as positive takes with the series. People who claim Goku to be a bad father because of his choice to stay on Yardrat because we didn’t get a reason outside him learning Instant Transmission. We can *speculate* but we’re never given one. (Also that’s literally the only reason the bad dad take could exist. He died to protect Gohan and left for 7 years to protect everyone, he’s been very kind to Gohan otherwise. (c)

dragon-ball-meta:

OK, we’re actually gonna address this piece by piece here since it’s long.

Truth be told, we actually do get a lot more information than people think we do. It’s just not specific. For example, Goku’s choice to stay on Yardrat was strongly implied to be an effort by him to learn to fully control his newfound strength before he returned, as illustrated in this panel here.

A simple pat on the back was enough to send Chi-Chi through a wall and Goku scrambling after her to tend to any injuries and apologize profusely. From that, as well as his ability to not only transform at will but to take a guy who just beat Freeza even more easily than he himself did by using a single finger, simple logic dictates that’s probably a good part of why he stayed on Yardrat: to hone his power. So in that sense, a lot of this is actually the fandom simply being unable to grasp what’s in the series.

© In Super, Gohan is an adult. He doesn’t need his dad’s support much anymore and we actually see him spend a bunch of time with Goten and support all of Gohan’s endevors (becoming a scholar and starting martial arts again). Goku and Chichi clearly must be miserable because of their cartoony fights, which people ignore to be comedic moments and because we never *see* the relationship blossom on screen. People always *assume* the worst ©

This is true, but again, it’s clearly communicated yet the fans do not grasp it. They also will then often turn to Toyotaro’s manga (which Toriyama himself is disregarding in his current writing) to reinforce their bias as Toyotaro shares that bias and even went out of his way to very specifically write it into the dialogue. (But remember, Goku is totally his favorite character).

© Equally, Vegeta and Bulma must not have a connection at all because of the rocky start of their relationship, eventhough Super and the Buu arc show Vegeta genuinely cares now. It’s all pretty simple. Personally, I think all relationships except Gohan’s and Videl’s have this problem – much of their dynamic is implied or not elaborated. I’m so grateful for Super for actually giving those slice of life episodes. I don’t think Krillin and 18 had much interaction in the original manga either. ©

Ok, this is actually not entirely true. In fact, it’s simply not. Next to nobody assumes Vegeta and Bulma have no connection; rather, the majority of the fanbase way, way overestimated and overstated that connection to a very high level even when there really was none in the series. When Bulma had baby Trunks, for example, she genuinely could not stand Vegeta, and Vegeta was perfectly willing to let her and their son die to chase Gero and prove himself “superior”. That bond didn’t come til much later (and frankly could be argued to be in direct response to fan demand and expectation more than anything else). Much of the others, including Vegeta and Bulma to a point, was Toriyama simply putting his visions he’d had off-paper into the series proper, with 17 becoming a ranger, 18 and Krillin having a very loving and normal household, etc.

That being said, Krillin and 18 actually had a pretty healthy amount of interaction in the manga, especially given their supporting roles by the Buu arc, and they were shown to care for each other very much, with 18 very specifically telling Krillin to get back to her immediately if he was in danger. Before that, in the Cell arc, there was quite a bit as well. Goku and Chi-Chi have also had a good bit of interaction in the manga, much of it positive except where played for blatant comedy.

And not to bag on Videl and Gohan, but their “romantic” interactions are hardly fleshed out. She goes from trying to expose his alter ego and barely giving him the time of day, to suddenly crushing on him as she blackmails him, and vice versa. It’s a very very SUB subplot, as was most of the romance in the series. It’s just also one that’s based on a very common trope in both Eastern and Western media, so readers and viewers are much more easily able to fill in the proverbial blanks for them.

© Super actually *shows* us the relationships and fleshes them out. I seriously did not care much for any of them outside of Gohan/Videl because they actually interacted on screen much more than any other and had a much more fleshed out dynamic than the others, but now I care for all of them. That was long, but tl;dr people like to assume the worst when not much is there. Toriyama just isn’t much of a fan of writing romance, so he left that to the background and then, well, people assume worst

Well, yes and no. While Super’s been able to make it more prominent, it was, again, still present in Toriyama’s work. Just not in the forefront.

All people have to do is be willing to see it rather than try to dismiss it out of hand.

Yeah people need to get it through their heads. 18 loves Krillin. Thats her man, her husband, the father of her child. Besides Emotional sex because you love eachother is automatically better than fucking because you’re both attractive. (Besides its a given Krillin is super Generous in bed and knows her super well. 18 has a beautiful daughter with a man who probably takes care of her needs Daily)

Yeah I agree with everything you say. He’s her man whether people like it or not but im used to it. People in fandoms hate pretty much everyone whos “ugly”. Yellowtail from SU, Brienne from GoT, they say because shes not traditionally pretty she should be a lebian, They call Kylo AND his actor ugly. People suck because they only see beauty and beauty alone. Like the last hate anon who wanted 18 to become a pedophile just because she said the two underaged kids were hotter than Krillin.. That’s why Krillin has a love interest, because he actually has a great personality and thats why 18 stay satisfied. She didn’t want anyone but Krillin.

I mean, do people recall that she actually had someone traditionally considered VERY handsome, with a ton of fangirls, hit on her in the past? Asked her to go to dinner with him. Her response?

She didn’t even give him the respect of looking his direction before burning his ass and sending him flying.

She’s happy with her family, she loves them dearly. She’s very supportive, protective, and even possessive of her husband, gets jealous at the thought of him showing interest in another woman. You don’t do that over someone you “settled” for.

People need to get over it.

AH, and let us not forget:

You certainly don’t make hearts in your husband’s coffee if you’re just going through the motions.

Those two are still in the “newlyweds phase” all these years later and it’s precious.
