I think it also comes with a significant boost in strength so not exactly?
I mean power still isn’t the end-all, be-all. Cell made that perfectly clear when Trunks fought him, and Goku said the same in the ROSAT.
So even now, other aspects are emphasized.
What it DOES do, however, is address a bit of an issue that’s been coming in DB for a while now; mortal bodies inevitably have limits. They can only do so much. It’s why Goku was able to maintain SSJ3 with relative ease when dead, but when alive and back in the physical realm, it burned through his energy fast. It was a limit he hadn’t had when dead. Similarly, Vegeta noted they were receiving diminishing returns from their training and may be reaching the limits of their strength a ways back.
What this does is still hold to that rule, yet allow a means by which to transcend mortal and physical limits. To tap purely into one’s soul and mind, move almost instantaneously. It also has a lot of roots in martial arts philosophy, especially as espoused by Bruce Lee, as I’ve mentioned before.
(Fun fact: The Kamesennin School of Martial Arts takes it’s “our style is there is no style” also stems from Bruce Lee’s belief that “styles” separate man and are a limiter that prevents “honest expression” and “continuing growth”.)
In short, UI is essentially a narrative loophole, but a very creative and kickass one. lol
Okay, so I decided to read the manga once again (the original), and of course I had to make a short post defending goku after reading the Raditz Saga.
I believe this ONE page is enough to make my point. So I separeted just a few panels of this page in particular.
1- Please, pay attention to the way Raditz formulate his question
2- Goku’s Answer
Now THIS is really important! The way Goku is being told to as a character lately simple states that all he cares is going after powerful opponents, that he dont care about Chichi and his sons, but yet, in here he clearly make his point that all he wants is Gohan back.
Goku knows about Gohan’s inner power and that he is fine. But yet his answer for the reason he went after Raditz wasnt “Because I want to fight strong opponents”, but instead “To take back my son!!”.
3- The Impatience
How many times have we seen Goku act like this? He is a calm person, to piss Goku off it takes a lot of effort and messing with the wrong people.Â
Its true that he wants to become stronger and face tough enemies. But he has never forgot those that are dear to him. Â And just to finish this post. As ever a man that dont care act like this?
Fun little overlooked thing: Goku, despite being significantly stronger than Piccolo at this point, was unable to put the full force of his blow into this hit. That’s one interesting tidbit, yes, but another is that, even still it should have damaged Piccolo more than it did with him being wide open..
Seems the power-up process, and one reason it’s not interrupted, may actually lead to a bulked-up defense as well. Also slightly reinforced by Cell being essentially untouchable during his final transformation.
Almost as if there’s just some sort of counterforce as it happens. Then again with all but Freeza’s change into his true form, there wasn’t much of one. Vegeta’s power-up though, in the Saiyan Saga, had extremely intense winds whipping outward as well, and people are often seen shielding themselves from and even being pushed back by the force of some of these power-ups, transformation or otherwise.
Would be very interested to see if there’s any kind of official info on this somewhere.
(Also kinda cool to note Piccolo was always capable of storing energy he’d gathered even after taking a pretty good hit.)
