So Iâve seen a few posts lately wondering whatever happened to the origami penguin Ed gave Oswald in Arkham. Like everyone else, I want to believe that Oswald held onto it.
Problem is, Iâve tried to hold onto origami figurines, and itâs really fucking hard. Especially if itâs special to you and you donât want it to get messed up. Eventually you move around, it gets moved from place to place, it gets torn and wrinkled and soft and impossible to preserve just on its own. So yeah, he probably wouldnât have been able to hold onto it for long.
NOW ONTO MY REALIZATION.
Edâs puzzle box.
The puzzle box Oswald gave him that no other man can solve but Ed solved in 0.2 seconds.
The puzzle box that I assume, based on that information, Ed did not keep.
Because honestly, why would he? Sentiment, maybe. But it would be incredibly unsatisfying to keep a puzzle like that once youâve already solved it in 0.2 seconds. Especially when youâre Edward Nygma.
So what if Oswald kept it? More importantly, what if Oswald kept the origami penguin inside of it?
He would never have to worry about anyone finding out about his sentimentality, because no one can solve the puzzle box especially not the idiot goons with which he surrounds himself.
Except Ed. Which, in and of itself is a really beautiful metaphor.
Like, just imagine Ed breaks into Oswaldâs house or office to plant some sort of trap, and he finds the puzzle box from all those years ago, and he opens it up and thereâs this tiny, old, delicate wrapping paper penguin lovingly tucked right inside.
Ed wakes up too early for no reason in particular. There are no guards making a racket on the other side of a locked door. No nightmare of desperate hands choking the life from a beautiful girl. Just the light from the window, warming his blankets and eyelids and beckoning him to get up and come downstairs for coffee.
He spends too long looking at himself in the bathroom mirror, at the lack of bruises beneath his eyes and at the smile he canât school his mouth into abandoning. At how full and healthy and alive he looks, detailed and well cared for, like an artist bled love and attention onto a canvas until it became everything it was always meant to be.
He canât be grateful enough to Oswald, he thinks over breakfast. He listens to Gothamâs beloved mayor rant about something from the morning paper, some article Ed will read and evaluate later, and feels warm and affectionate watching the annoying way Oswald brutalizes his soft boiled egg.
#okay, letâs talk about this #i know that ed was insistent sometimes but #he was truly sweet to kristen at the beginning and she always treated him like he was nothing, making him feel useless and weird #câmon look at his face in the left gifs #and now letâs talk about edâs genuine smile when oswald showed him kindness and appreciation #heâs the first person whoâs kind to him and who truly admire him #sooo wake up ed the love of your life is right in front of you
Like I feel bad for her cause having a guy insist on being with you when itâs obvious you arenât into him is scary and maddening.
But also like you said there is the point where she did treat him like garbage, then she only dated him cause he got shot for her and told her they were going to date. She never really loved him, she just wanted to make him a guy she would want. Oswald on the other hand seems to accept and genuinely enjoy Ed and his things that make him Ed.
^ Exactly!! đđŒđđŒđđŒ
>Oswald wanted him around, exactly as he was. >Kristen didnât want him around, and when she did deign to have him around he had to change the way he acted to please her.
please tell me which one is healthier like??? >>>itâs a rhetorical question
ListenâŠÂ  This is why I didnât and will never ship Ed and Kristen. She was mean to him and treated him like dirt. Like I understand that he was making unwanted advances but Ed didnât understand that what he doing wasnât okay. He doesnât understand social interaction all that well, that was made clear in season 1.Â
All Kristen did was yell and say mean things to him but I donât think she ever told him that she wasnât interested in him. Maybe she did and it just wasnât shown and I know itâs clear to everyone else that sheâs not interested but it clearly wasnât to Ed. And I get it, telling a guy to back off can be scary but she had no problem yelling at him and telling him that he is odd straight to his face, so I donât think that was the issue. I think she found Ed annoying and weird but still liked the attention that he gave her.Â
Like, I have a friend who used to have someone like her the way Ed liked Kristen. He did things for her and gave her gifts, called her phone a lot and sent texts despite her not replying, and basically stalked her so much that she would refer to him as âstalkerâ when we would talk about him. But, while she yelled at him sometimes for his behavior she never told him to back off because he wasnât threatening or dangerous. She also never let me go after him for any of the weird shit he did even though I told her that I would beat him up and tell him off for her if he ever got to be too much (I was a violent person before). But the reason for that, as I found of later, was because she liked the attention even if she didnât like him and found him annoying. I think Kristen was the same way.
She didnât want to encourage his feelings in anyway but she also still wanted to continue to receive attention from him. And listen, Iâm not just pulling this out of nowhere.Â
Remember the scene where Kristen walked in while Ed had Officer Doughertyâs body in the sink? When Ed and Kristen interact normally Ed would compliment her or tell her a riddle, but in this instant she asks him questions and he just answers them and then waits for her to leave. No riddle, no compliment, nothing. When he tells her that he has to get back to work and he needs her to leave and he basically kicks her out, her reaction is one of surprise. Sheâs just like, uhh okay, and gets ushered out the door. Edâs not normally one to kick her out, normally sheâs the one kicking him out. I think she was stalling a bit because she was expecting the usual riddle or compliment from Ed but wasnât getting one, and didnât get one. So, yeah, while she doesnât like Ed she likes his attention.Â
Even when she decides to date him, she only liked him because he was acting differently. She never liked Ed for him. She wanted him to change.
Oswald however, accepted Ed for who he was. Never expecting him to change, loving him and all his quirks, and constantly giving him positive feedback and validation. Oswald was the first person to truly show him kindness and genuine appreciation. Oswald is the true love of Edwardâs life. He just needs to figure that out and I hope he does soon.
THIS ^ God this was brilliant. I needed this. Couldnât have said it better myself.
If Cory said hating someone in Gotham is basically the same as loving them and Robin said killing someone means you care then are they confirming Ed is in love with Oswald in cryptic form?!?!?
I remember Robin saying that the true opposite of love is indifference, so if Ed really felt nothing for Oswald, he wouldnât bother with all these âfite me, broâ antics. His level of obsession at this point is strongly suggesting heâs got some serious feelings that need to be worked out.
Bryan Wynbrandt: âI think thereâs definitely stuff within the canon that we as a room are more willing to be nimble with and more willing to go a different direction than the canon. For instance, the Penguin/Nygma love story.â
