The scent of blood was familiar enough in the packed,
overcrowded city that Phantom ignored the sharpening of his fangs and
the tingle in his eyes that meant they were shifting from green to red.
What he didn’t ignore–what he couldn’t ignore–was the recognition that
sent a spark shooting down his spine, a sharp gasp to his lips that
pulled the scent to his tastebuds. He paused in the alleyway
and braced his hand against the brick walls as he savored the rare taste
of Danny’s blood, a moment the young hunter would have glared at him
for if he’d known.
But why was he bleeding?
Why in all the hells was he even out this late?
Phantom jumped to the roof
of the building on his right, a move that often made Danny swear and
Tucker scream. Sam would have simply rolled her eyes, secret vampire
heiress that she was. The move cost Phantom Danny’s scent, but hopefully
he wouldn’t need it. He followed the direction of the wind to the north
side of the building and scanned the area in front of him.
The wind hadn’t been strong, so Danny had to be close.
