theglowpt2:

if you’ve seen the breaking news that trump just signed an executive order today to end the family separation policy here’s some quick info to keep things in perspective

  • this doesn’t end the “zero tolerance” policy of prosecuting anyone who crosses the border “illegally”
  • the only thing this changes is that going forward, entire families will be detained together while awaiting prosecution
  • this offers no solution for freeing the thousands of children currently held in ICE child prisons or any path to reuniting them with their families
  • children will still be detained and treated as criminals
  • this will likely lead to thousands of families being held in ICE facilities and tent cities that will face the exact same issues of overcrowding, abuse, and inhumane conditions that exist in the child prisons

this is not a victory or a solution. This is the administration trying to cover their asses and avoid any more public outrage. They want people to see this as the end of the news story and go back to their lives. They want people to forget the thousands of children they are still keeping in cages in ICE facilities across the nation. This issue is not over and we cannot stop being outraged until we are given proof that the thousands of kidnapped children are returned to their families, and that the policy of arresting and prosecuting people who cross the border is ended.

good morning don’t fucking use essential oils around your pets especially birds and reptiles and cats spraying your pet with diluted lavender isn’t going to antioxidize them or whatever stupid bullshit you pulled off a holistic website

Don’t use around fish either! If you have a diffuser in the same room as your tank, the oils can settle on the surface of the water. It’s especially dangerous for bettas.

story time: i’ve had a stalker since 2011

His name is Kevin Leader. Our friend circles vaguely overlapped at my first college. I never formally met him, so he saw me before I ever saw him. I got a brief, seemingly harmless message on Facebook from him on September 20, 2011. I responded nicely, because that’s what I do. Clearly, I’m too nice for my own good sometimes, because he has not left me alone since. Here’s the first message:

Hey guys. It’s been about two weeks since I made this post and he’s messaged me yet again today. I’m spreading this further in hopes that anyone would have information on him. I also just don’t want this happening to anyone else (he’s mentioned in previous messages he’s “fixated” on other girls before, not sure how true that is), so I want his name out there. He used to go to Valdosta State University and GA Tech, that’s all we really know for sure.

Please reblog and share, and thank you so much.

Hey guys

1st off just want to say thank you for all the thoughtful and helpful responses. It means a lot.

2nd Thank you to a few of you that went above and beyond and got us information on this creep (within a few hours). We have enough information to take this all to the proper authorities. As it turns out Kevin Indra Leader has done this to girls other than just me. Please spread this around so other people don’t fall victim to his stalking. Here is what this creep looks like.

bit by Mocha, my hognose snake, yesterday
—
please if you have or plan to get a hognose BE AWARE THIS CAN HAPPEN
even though Mocha is the sweetest hognose he mistook my hand for food, it happens.
I’m not mad, I’m not scared of him, I’m not adopting him out
however my hand is so swollen I can’t move it
this post is to show you what you have to be willing to suffer if you want a hognose
I’m not saying this will happen to everyone, it’s very rare to be bit but know this is the aftermath!!! you have to be prepared and willing to take on the worst situation possible when dealing with ANY venomous animal

Agreed! Their “venom” is basically the equivalent of a bee sting-it is defined as toxin non deadly to humans, but some people have more extreme reactions than others. When Coco was under 10 inches long she got a feeding hold on my finger for 10 minutes, my finger didnt swell nearly to that equivalent size. On the other end, hognose groups on facebook have examples of a bite making a large part of some people’s arms swell.

Hognoses make wonderful pets but its recommended that you look elsewhere if you have a suspicion you may be allergic to something like a bee sting, or if you do not have the resources to go to a hospital in the worst case you find out the hard way

This reminds me of when my rat bit me. I put my hand in-between two boys who were about to brawl and the result was “a death bite”. I think Harley was trying to kill my other rat. (He held on even as I was screaming and it took a good 10 seconds before he let me go which he has NEVER DONE)

My hand swelled 3 times the size (exactly like this picture), he caused nerve damage (I still can’t feel my index finger and this was LAST YEAR) and I have two scars where his teeth went in.

This was a RAT.

All animals with teeth or sharp beaks could do this. Be aware that extreme cases like this CAN happen. They are very rare but it’s possible. Rats don’t have venom but they do have bacteria. Learn your pets body signs so you can at least try to predict if something is gonna happen.

*I knew I could get hurt putting my hand in between two fighting rats. I didn’t care because I wanted to keep my rats from getting hurt. I took the worst bite I’ve ever experienced (instead of my rat getting it). I don’t regret it, but I do wish it didn’t happen.

Which is why I’m adding on. So y’all know it’s not just snakes. Its not just “venom”. It can be a rat with a powerful bite. It can be an allergic reaction from a cat scratch. It doesn’t have to break the skin either. Some birds have strong enough beaks that they can cause massive damage just from pressure.

UPDATE ON THE HAWAII ERUPTIONS

first off, news sources have been giving misinfo, the volcano is not erupting! It did let out a large plume of smoke, but there is no volcanic eruption

What is happening is (as of now, 5-5-18) there are 6 fissures opening in a residential area and erupting

And no, this isn’t “normal” or “expected because you live on a volcano”, these eruptions are happening over 25 miles away from the typical area. And keep in mind that they are their own flows, and not a big flow created by the volcano

In fact, the people living on the volcano itself are perfectly fine

All of this is only happening in the puna district of the big island, it isn’t a state wide emergency

(Map showing affected area)

People surrounding the area have also evacuated due to the possibility of gas and due to the 6.9 magnitude earthquake (that’s why I had to leave)

Unless you live in the immediate area of Leilani estates the real danger currently is earthquakes

No one knows how long this will last, but last time there was an eruption similar to this was in 1955 and lasted 88 days, I really fucking hope that’s not the case this time

So anyways please reblog since major news stations have been spreading misinformation

KÄ«lauea has been continuously erupting since 1983. What we are seeing in the Leilani estates is simply an unexpected divergence of lava due to the Pu’u O’o crater floor collapse.

PSA: Don’t put fucking bergamot on your skin or in your soap.

I’ve been seeing a lot of this shit lately.

image

Apparently bergamot is getting popular. I figure now’s a good time to address the issue.

Bergamot is a citrus fruit that smells amazing, so a lot of people like to make essential oils out of it and put it in candles and stuff.

However, this should NEVER go on your skin. It has the same effects as Giant Hogweed (& some other wild carrots like Queen Anne’s Lace) and will give you nasty rashes and chemically hyper-boosted sunburns by making skin highly reactive to sunlight.

Remember this?

image

I personally have had friends who were seriously hurt by putting bergamot essential oils on their skin. It sucks.

In case you don’t want to look it up yourself:

image

Don’t use or make bergamot soap.
Don’t use or make bergamot lotion.
Don’t use or make bergamot anything that goes on your skin.

Just don’t put bergamot on your skin.

Stay safe beautiful! ❤ And please signal boost this!

The bergamot in Earl Grey tea is the best thing in the world. Bergamot on your skin isn’t.

I saw a sad facebook post from the gay bookstore back in Ann Arbor where I used to live about how they hadn’t sold any books that day so I went on their online store and bought a couple, and while you don’t get #deals like elsewhere online, I’d love it if y’all would consider buying your next gay book from them instead of like, Amazon.

speaking of being a massive ecology nerd, guess what season it is, folks!

That’s right, it’s FLEDGLING BIRD SEASON here in North America, which means it’s time for an annual reminder that most species of birds have almost no sense of smell. Someone probably told you that if you touch a baby bird, the mother will smell you on it and reject her baby. THAT IS NOT THE CASE.

Pictured: a young Mourning Dove, after being rescued from the tender mercies of my dog, circa spring 2005. It’s a fledgling! Note how it has most of its feathers, but still looks a bit awkward and scruffy, and, being unable to properly fly, can be caught by an elderly husky or a child.

image
  • Hatchlings: IF it is covered in fluffy down (or partly naked) and cannot flutter successfully, it’s a hatchling, and has fallen from its nest prematurely. Look for the nest- if you find it and can reach it, return baby and then gtfo and let the parents return. If you can’t find the nest, or if you find it in pieces on the ground, use a small box lined with dryer lint or dog hair or similar fluff and attach as close as possible to where you found the bird or where you think the nest was. Return baby!!!!
  • Fledglings: If you spot a young bird covered with feathers on the ground, chances are it’s a fledgling (bird tween, can flutter) who is not doing well in flying 101, but it is probably NOT injured or sick. Hanging out on the ground is part of the learning to fly process! If it looks like it’s in immediate danger (i.e. of being run over, stepped on, or eaten by a cat or dog), the best thing you can do for it is to gently scoop it up and place it in the branches of a nearby tree or shrub, and then LEAVE. The parents are likely nearby, and will return once the coast is clear of humans/predators. If it flutter-hops away from you and you can’t catch it, then don’t worry! It just successfully avoided a predator (you), and therefore can probably continue to do so.
  • DON’T DON’T DON’T: Try to feed it, bring it into your house or car, or take it to your local vet or animal shelter.
  • IF it IS actually for-real injured, you can catch it and contact a local wildlife rehabilitation professional (and then listen to whatever they tell you), but keep in mind that they get a LOT of fledgling birds, and those birds have a pretty high mortality rate. They may tell you that there is nothing you or they can do but allow nature to take its course, and that’s hard, but important to hear and respect.

Be aware that the bird should be considered to be injured if a cat has touched it with teeth or claws, even if it doesn’t look like it’s hurt. Cats’ saliva is full of bacteria that have an extremely high infection and fatality rate for small animals like birds, and it’s usually also on their claws. Contact a wildlife rehabilitator and let them know there was a cat involved.
