Omg this one might be a little sad and bittersweet. I love this AU soooo much!
1. Becoming a reaper was, in Lizzys eyes, the only way to obtain more power and save Ciel.
2. Ciel was one to discover Elizabethâs body. She had come over to his mansion the day before and spent the entire day with him. Heâd wondered why she went to bed that day crying. He understood when he discovered her corpse the next morning when heâd went to surprise Elizabeth by waking her up.
3. Elizabeth had died in her favorite white dress. Ciel thought it very much resembled a wedding dress.
4. The other members of the phantomhive household were alerted of the suicide when they heard ciels screams and sobs coming from the guest bedroom. They ran over only to see Ciel cradling lizzys dead body and begging her to come back to him.
5. Grell and Ronald were the first reapers Lizzy met. They both immediately took a liking to her. Grell loved that elizabeth had died out of love for another person, it truly was passionate demise in her eyes. Ronald admired Elizabethâs strength and determination.
7. Lizzy had decided to kill herself when she became 18. She had become desperate since she had no idea of how to save Ciel. She knew that ciels death was imminent, so she commenced this plan as a last ditch effort to help ciel.
8. with his last true family member gone, Ciel nearly went mad. He was lucky that he met Lizzy as a reaper on his next mission for the queen.
9. Ciels first mission for the queen happened to be lizzys first soul collecting assignment (with Ronald and grell as her mentors). Upon their first meeting, Lizzy didnât go to greet Ciel, instead she immediately, ruthlessly began attacking Sebastian. As a reaper, Lizzy was a much more formidable opponent. Grell and Ronald had to practically drag her away from the fight. But it was Ciel who ended the battle by screaming at Sebastian to cease his attacks. Elizabeth left without a word of explanation.
10. Meeting Lizzy again gave Ciel the courage to continue living. Lizzy may have been dead, but her light had not yet been extinguished from his life.
Oof I should stop there I guess. I have so much more to write! Iâm considering making a fanfiction out of this now lol. Thanks for the request!
Black Butler has had its fair share of dramatic reveals.  Maybe there is one on the horizon for WilliamâŠ.
*Warning: long post*
There is something quite striking about the
main battle of the Campania arc: Undertaker managed to take down one demon and
two shinigami single-handedly without even breaking sweat, all with a smile on
his face. Â Considering that we havenât seen the last of Undertaker, this
begs the question: who is capable of taking on such a formidable foe?
And
one night, at 3 a.m., something hit me: the crucial issue in Campania was reach.
In boxing, reach is the length from a fighterâs
fingertips to shoulder, i.e. the length of his arm. Â Boxers
with a longer reach have an advantage over those with a shorter reach.
There are, of course, other factors, (agility, footwork, etc.) but that
was the starting point.
The reach of Undertakerâs scythe is far greater than Grellâs chainsaw and Ronaldâs lawnmower (and Iâm not even going to address a
butter knife at this point.) Â What this means is that Undertaker could
always slash either Ronald or Grell in a head-to-head match, and that is
exactly what happened:
Distracting Undertaker and attacking him from
a different angle was therefore the only possible strategy for Grell, Ronald,
and Sebastian. Â As we saw how well that worked out with Sebastian, as
Undertaker seems to have superior senses than all three:
To add to that, Undertaker is also a master
strategist when it comes to fighting. Â He knows how to use an opponentâs
weakness (Ciel in the case of Sebastian, aiming for the face with Grell,
knocking off glasses for Ronald.) Any opponent who is easily distracted,
angered, or who is protecting someone else isnât going to be able to defeat
him.
Keeping in mind how Undertaker bested Ronald,
Grell, and Sebastian in Campania, what then is needed to take down Undertaker?
I believe it comes down to this:
1.   Â
An opponent with basic superhuman strength and agility
2.   Â
An opponent with a longer reach
3.   Â
An opponent with superior senses
4.   Â
An opponent who can fight strategically
5.   Â
An opponent who has no emotional or physical weakness to exploit
But have we even met someone who meets those
four criteria? Â (You might have figured out where I am going with this
when you read that last oneâŠ.)
Thatâs right, itâs going to be this guy:
Why?
I shall lay out my case for you.
1. Â Strength and
agility
The character guide hints that William might
even be stronger than Sebastian. Â Since Sebastian seemed evenly matched
with Grell from a physical standpoint, it would follow logically that William
is at least as strong as Grell, if not stronger.
If the OVA is any guide, then Will is also
agile enough to take onâand bestâGrell in combat.
His reflexes are also quite goodâin the Circus
arc, he managed to put his glasses on, sit up, and block Sebastian with his
death scythe as soon as Sebastian sat up in bed. And Will was asleep at the
time. Thatâs pretty quick.
2. Reach
This one is so very simple: Williamâs death
scythe allows for long distance attacks. Â It seems to extend quite farâfar
enough for him to reach the ground from atop the roof of a there storey
building. Â Thatâs at least 30 feet! Â He could easily stab or pierce
Undertaker in a vital spot from a very safe distance.
In fact, I think reach will be so important in
the final battle, because Yana actually referred to it as being an important
part of the battle with Undertaker:
Hint, hint: the key to defeating him lies in
neutralizing the advantage he has with the large reach of his scythe.
He could safely stab or pin down Undertaker
from a safe distance as was shown with Angela in Season 1 of the anime:
3. Superior senses
This one might not be as obvious, but there
are hints to be found. Â Right after William is first introduced to us in
the manga and he is then about to take his leave, Sebastian flings Grellâs
chainsaw at the back of his head. Without turning, William catches it between
two fingers, not even flinching.
He therefore was able to sense it coming at
his head, without having to rely on his vision.
Undertaker gained an advantage over Ronald by
removing his glasses from the equation. Â This, however, would pose no
problem for Will. Since he is capable of catching a motorized death scythe thrown
by a demon to the back of his head without even looking, itâs possible that he
doesnât not need to rely on his vision to the extent that Ronald (and perhaps
Grell) do. Â Though he was thrown off track by losing his glasses in the
OVA, I wonder if this is due to his being a rookie at the time. Â Although
anything is possible, I wonder if by now he has become cool and stoic enough to
not be fazed should he lose his glasses in combat with a formidable foe like
Undertaker.
He is also the only shinigami who has spoken
of sensing Sebastian from a distance. Â It is possible that this means that
his senses are then quite highly developed.
4. Â Strategic
fighting ability
We havenât seen Will fight in the manga
proper, but weâve seen him in action in the reaper OVA. Oh, but you might be
sayingâhe almost lost that fight with Grell, didnât he? Â Yes and no.
Analyzing their fight is quite illuminating.
The first time they come to blows, Grell just flat out knocks him into a
wall, and William does nothing to retaliate. Â However, on their second
fight, Will quickly neutralizes Grell, then after some words, efficiently takes
down Grell in only a few blows. Â What I think is likely is that he learned
Grellâs fighting style from their first encounterâand from this, Will emerged
knowing exactly how to defeat Grell in combat. Â (Whether or not he let
Grell win on purpose so as to understand his opponentâs fighting style is
interesting to think about.) Â As a result, their second fight is over in
secondsâbecause Will knew exactly how to defeat Grell.
He is therefore a strategic, analytical
fighter, who understands his opponent and who is be able to predict his
opponentâs moves after just one encounter. Â He is no-nonsense, cold,
efficient fighter, and that leads into the last point.
5. Â No weakness
to exploit
For whatever reason, Will appears to be a detached,
stoic person. Â Other than the frustration and annoyance that
his job brings, he rarely shows any emotion, and he often speaks of how emotions
are not a part of a shinigamiâs job. Â Would he be as rattled as Ronald should he lose his glasses in combat? Â Would he be as distractible as
Grell? Â Is he so tied to anyone like Sebastian is? Â To all three points, I donât think
soâWill has no attachments, nothing to hold him back nor anything to be
exploited.
Being cold and distant gives him an advantage against Undertaker in that there is little Undertaker could say or do to ruffle his feathers, so to speak. Â What kinds of things could Undertaker even say to upset him?
(Iâm sure he could think of somethingâŠ.but wouldnât William just shrug it
off and keep fighting?) Â Where Grell is all talk during their fight in the OVAâWilliam is all action. Â And that cold efficiency would yield a better result when fighting against someone like Undertaker.
And, in addition to all of the above:
In addition to all of these things, Will is
already collecting information on Undertaker, he is aware of the Phantomhives,
and appears to be a generally perceptive and intelligent individual.
Having knowledge on his side will only help him.
Now just think of how this will all play out
if he faces down Undertaker. Â He has gathered information on the Bizarre
Dolls, so that wonât be a surprise to him. Â He may have asked Grell and
Ronald about the methods Undertaker used to beat them, and therefore he might already have an
understanding of Undertakerâs fighting strategy and has already devised a counter strategy as a result. He has
highly-developed senses, he has reflexes on par with a demon, he understands
how to use strategy to his benefit, and he is coldly focused on his goal.
All of these factors add up so that it may
very well be William T. Spears defeating Undertaker in battle.
We have yet to see Willâs full potentialâand
the reason for this may be that Yana has been saving his pugilistic reveal for
the final showdown between him and Undertaker. Â And given that this manga
loves to subvert our expectations, I think it is altogether possible that
William T. Spears has a few surprises up his sleeve.
If I were Undertaker, Iâd be afraidâŠ..
Letâs also not forget his vast pigeon army
willing to follow his every beck and call! Â Swarm! Â Swarm! Swarm!!!
 Go for the eyes!!!
Thanks are due to @eviltwintheory for helping me sound out these ideas and for providing me with
some points salient to this post.
As much as this post is basically âyes 100%â for me, and goes over in full one of the reasons why I think Will and Undertaker meeting in the manga is kind of inevitable⊠You missed a point. Or rather, you got it wrong. Whether you take it seriously or not, Will has been shown to panic when his glasses are removed in combat and in general.
During season 2 in a fight involving him, Sebastian, and Ronald, Sebastian knocks Willâs glasses off. Will drops everything and begins to ignore Sebastian while searching for his glasses. Arguably this is just the logic of season 2 and is made to correlate with the events of the ova, however, in the most recent seiyuu event something very similar happened.
Lau pinned Will against the wall and took his glasses, and Will was visibly taken off guard by this. He didnât show his usual âfightâ response, his focus went straight to the fact that his glasses had been taken. This wasnât a fight situation, so there was no reason for him to panic as he did in season 2, but it stands regardless that Will likely does not deal well with having his glasses removed, just like Ronald. He freezes up when his glasses are removed unexpectedly. This is canon.
Will seems cool-headed but he has shown himself to be very childish, and very stubborn. That was during his interactions with Ciel and Sebastian during the circus arc, where a lot of Willâs character as the manga presents it was established. You may also note that when he got out his scythe to work against Sebastian, having been asleep, he still put his glasses on first. Like. Why, Will. Why. Willâs nervous habit even centralizes around his glasses.
As a reaper, they are one of the most significant pieces of his identity, and as a person their loss is tied to past trauma from his ova.
Will would most likely be able to ignore anything and everything Undertaker says and keep his cool, by way of his stubborn nature. But I donât think Will would respond well to having his glasses removed. Thereâs too much to contradict that so far and it would be a surprise to me if that was the case.
Youâve theorised before that Willâs emotions and empathy run deeper than surface appearances and I absolutely agree with that, so to say he has no emotional weaknesses is also incorrect. But he could brush aside any attacks aimed at those weaknesses because he is stubborn.
William could and probably will give Undertaker a run for his money in a fight, but he is no paragon. He does have weaknesses which Undertaker could exploit. What would be more interesting is if Undertaker does exploit those weaknesses and mid fight Will moves past them to win anyway. That would be infinitely more entertaining to the audience and could provide for some very efficient cliffhangers between chapters.
I personally have no doubts that Will and Undertaker are set to meet in the manga, I just wonder whether (and which) one will end up dead, or whether Will might get Undertaker to return to Dispatch (as happened briefly in anime season 1, near the end), or Undertaker might get Will to desert, which would be such a mind-blowing plot-twist. I mean. Maybe not for me since this is the sort of thing I ponder constantly, but for the rest of the fandom sure.
Anyway my point is neither Will or UT are perfect fighters, though I do agree that Will has the best chance of any character weâve seen so far of stopping UT.
*mindblown* I never thought about Undertaker getting William to desert. I also thought William was potentially one of the strongest Kuro character, so if he leaves and possibly with Undertaker. I would think we’re fcked. Lol.
Iâll be honest – Iâve never seen this show but itâs gifs and stuff like this that makes me think itâs hella worth itâŠ
This series really is worth it. Like here, Ciel is clearly suffering PTSD. I just love the accurate potrayal of it! In most anime, I find it hard to like most characters, but in Black Butler they are all lovable and amazing!
Quick:
what are a few adjectives to describe William?
Cold. Â Distant. Â Detached.
Emotionless.
It
certainly seems that wayâŠ.but this manga has a way of playing with our
expectations. Â Because Lizzy is just a
cute little anime girl who could never defend herself, right? Â Mey-Rin is just a clumsy maid. Â Undertaker is just a harmless, but eccentric
old man. Â I could go on. Â So then, what does this mean for cold,
distant, emotionless dispatch supervisor William T. Spears?
Following
that above logic, then: thereâs perhaps more to Will than he lets on.
It
took me a little while to think of all this; and much credit goes to @eviltwintheory , whose extensive conversations helped us both to see William in
a different light.
Hereâs
a few things about William that might reveal some hidden depth:
A reaper, alone?
In
the Circus arc, he is shown perched on a roof, looking down at the Circus
troupe, reflecting on the situation at hand; he is no longer the comic relief
tightrope walker; donning his usual black suit and gloves, he has now become a
lone observer of a group of people whose souls he has to judge. Â With such gravity and seriousness, he
reflects on the situation at hand, which is about to come to intensify into
tragedyâa tragedy he knows is coming beforehand.
How
would it feel to live with a group of people whose time and cause of death you
knew ahead of time, and whose souls you had to collect when they died violent
deaths?
He
also likely witnessed the children in the Kelvin manor being burned to
death. Â Itâs easy to miss, but he hides
himself from view as Sebastian and Ciel arrive:
In
the next scene, he is still on the roof, waiting for backup to arrive. Â He was likely there the whole time.
What
would it be like to witness the death of a group of imprisoned childrenâwhose
death was caused by a demon under the orders of a traumatized thirteen-year-old
boyâknowing full well there was nothing you could to do stop such a tragedy?
While
many, if not all, reapers face situation, what would this be like for
someone who is painfully aware of their situation?
He
also seems to be alone amongst his own coworkers; in his character song, he
longs to live up to a perfect ideal; he craves an impossible sense of order in
a hopeless, cold world, and under the weight of his own memories and
shortcomings, he has nothing to comfort himself but his own loneliness:
He
is plagued by memories, unable to let go, and he has nothing to keep him
company other than his own solitary ruminations. Â Perhaps he is so detached, so unable to reach
out to anyone, that he thinks he deserves his own loneliness.
The
Cover for Chapter 27 also shows that William is prone to solitary contemplation:
Yana
drew him, sitting alone, going through the To-Die book with the caption:
âTo think and think, to ponder and ponder.
However, I cannot finish on time.â
What is there to ponder and think about, exactly? Â As Will says himself, isnât a reaperâs job to
collect souls and nothing more?
She
couldâve easily drawn him stressed out and complaining about overtime, but
instead we get a lonely, contemplative image suggesting a quiet, inner
struggle.
The
Lectures About Emotion
William
is prone to lecturing subordinates about how emotions should never be a part of
the job. Â The timing of these lectures
is, however, often quite curious.
Right
after Will witnesses the death of the children at the Kelvin manor, Ronald
arrives and says how it would be easier to be at the Phantomhive manor instead. Â William says that is unfortunate, then
launches in a lecture about how a reaper should focus on the task at hand and
leave emotions out of the job.
The
interesting thing is that Ronald isnât particularly emotional here. Â So who, then, is the lecture really intended
for? Â Could it be, that after witnessing
such an awful scene, William himself was affected by what happened, and that
lecture was more of a reminder to himself?
Perhaps
William is more sensitive than he lets onâand his cold, detached demeanor is a
way for him to distance himself from the nature of his work. Â Otherwiseâit might be too much to bear.
His
other lecture about emotions comes right on the heels of William recalling a
traumatic experience during his early days as a reaper. Â He had almost âdiedâ while collecting Thomas
Wallisâs soul; which seemed to be an emotional experience for him. Â In light of this, his lecture on judging
souls without emotion and without incident is rather telling. Â Though this happens in the reaper OVA, it
does seem in keeping with Will in manga canon.
The
B Student
Also
in the reaper OVA, it is revealed that by-the-rules William is no perfect
student, but instead is a straight B-student.
Given that he seems rather perfectionist, could it be frustrating (and perhaps
depressing) to continuously fall short of his ideal goal? Â I get the sense that he is rather hard on
himself; though he is harsh to his subordinates, he very well may be the
harshest with himself. Â The lyrics in his
character song about longing for an impossible goal further illuminate this.
Upholder of shinigami ethics
William
seems to strive to embody the ideal grim reaper: solemn, dignified,
serious. Â Dealing with a demon offends
him to his core; it is likely he deeply believes in these ethics and doctrines
quite passionately. Â When someone
violates these ethics, be it demon or shinigami, it therefore might wound him
quite personally. Â He takes the
principles of his job to heartâand that could set him up for bitterness and
frustration when reality turns out to be less than ideal.
Nervous
habits
The
character guide implies that Willâs constant glasses adjusting is something of
a nervous habit. Â What does he have to be
nervous about, I wonder?
He
also can barely tolerate being within 50 feet of Sebastian during the Circus
arcâwhereas other reapers donât seem that bothered by Sebastian. Â Is this just a fussy little quirk of hisâor is
there more to his hatred for demons?
He
also doesnât take kindly to having his behavior pointed out to him, if his
reaction to Ciel laughing at him is any indication:Â
Stuck
in a hopeless situation?
He
has a temper, that much is certain, and he always seems under pressure by some
sort of higher-up. Â He also seems to have
little control over his situation, given that the personnel department chooses
who accompanies him. Â Shepherding Grell
and Ronald while having to do his own work is also quite the responsibility,
too.
He
might very well be middle managementâforever stuck between his subordinates and
the higher upsâdealing with pressure on both ends, and stuck in a situation
that is often beyond his grasp. Â He
nonetheless does what he is supposed to do, but his situation could be quite
frustrating to him, especially since he seems to crave order and control over
his life.
Therefore:
All
these little clues are like tiny windows into Williamâs character: he may seem so
cold and distant to be almost unknowable, but perhaps these little glimpses all
add up when taken together. Â It may very
well be that his nervous habits, wistful longing about loneliness and order,
and perfectionism all result in a man who possesses much hidden depth.
Whether it is uncovered, however, remains to be seen.
But
in the meantime, try to look at William T. Spears a little bit more closely,
and you might notice something beneath the surfaceâŠ
YESSSS, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. This is exactly how I read William. You just canât take him at face value. (Or any of Yanaâs characters really.)
And this is why I love Kuroshitsuji so much. Especially the reapers. There is much depth and hidden mystery to the characters. It’s really fascinating. There truly is so much more to the characters and story than meets the eye.
In the Kuroverse there are a plethora of Grim Reaper characters, with at least 9 distinct Grim Reaper personalities all meddling with the human world. But why would Yana Toboso bother to include so many Grim Reapers? Surely one or two could get the single job they all do (reaping souls so you can see backstory) done? (like Scotland Yard with its 2 members)
A characteristic the Grim Reapers share is boredom (like the Undertaker, William, Ludger) or a longing for innovation in their monotonous jobs, and lives (Grell, Ronald, Sasha, Othello).
Sashaâs reaction goes to show how boring and unchanging the Grim Reaper world is. The Grim Reaper institution as complained about by many, is a strict and rigid society.
And when you want to start a revolution, you need multiple people to make an impact. So the Undertaker could be helping them in a revolution to change the way their society is run, bringing attention to his work to give them a shock or bribe with the reanimated corpses that seem to be causing trouble for them, so that the world of the Grim Reapers is ultimately reformed, allowing more innovation and individuality, and better working conditions, and help for those who are sick
(A reference to the Musical âthe most beautiful death in the worldâ, in which Alan and Eric leave the Grim Reaper department because Alanâs rare illnesses requires a sacrifice of one thousand souls to be cured).
Why does William hate overtime so much anyways. What are the hobbies he does outside of work? Not organising a revolution group I hopeâŠ
(In the official translation, the words to piss him off are âIâve always been part of the anti- overtime school to begin withâ) I see him as the mostly likely candidate for the leader because why act like such a goody-two-shoes, punishing everyone for breaking rules he knows off by heart, when he clearly hates his job, and doesnât want to be there doing it for a second longer than he has too?
Basically every character introduced by Yana Toboso plays a further role somewhere down the track (and if they donât, they die), so Iâm pondering the role of the abundance of Grim Reaper characters.
We know basically NOTHING about the supernatural elements of the Kuroverse, especially the home worlds and societies of demons and Grim Reapers, so I donât really have any hard evidence for or against this Shinigami uprising theory, itâs just food for thought.
Okay, I read ch138 and it was completely different from what I had expected, but it was interesting nevertheless. I never thought OC and Sebastian had negotiated the (conditions of the) contract in such detail lol.
Anyway here are my personal highlights of this chapter.Â
Warning: TEXT SPOILERS
Sebastian vs. OC – round 1 (real Cielâs death)
Sebastian tells OC that he has 3 wishes and the first thing OC asks Sebastian is whether itâs possible to bring back dead people.
Sebastianâs like âYeah sure, you want to live a happy, peaceful life with your brother? Iâll grant you that.â, but OC sees through Sebastianâs lie and says âYou are lying. You said âwhat has been sacrificed canât be returned anymoreâ. So all you can do is make me âbelieveâ that Ciel is alive, but in fact you canât bring him back. Am I right?â.
Sebastian is impressed by OC like âOh, you are smarter than I thought. But well, if I can make you âbelieveâ that your brother is still alive, it doesnât really matter whether your brother really is alive or dead, no?â to which OC reacts like âf*ck youâ
Sebastian vs. OC – round 2 (conditions of the contract)
Sebastian:Â âOh by the way, wishes such as âgranting more wishesâ or âcanceling the the contractâ are invalid.â
OC: âDammit.â Â
this was the funniest part imo xD
Sebastian vs. OC – round 3 (poor OC)
OC chooses his 3 wishes very carefully in order not to get deceived/betrayed by Sebastian. But only after OC said his third and last wish and the contract was officially formed, Sebastian reveals the most important condition of the contract, namely that heâll get OCâs soul as a reward at the end of the contract. Hence, OCâs shocked face at the end of the chapter.
Most important part of this monthâs chapter: Foreshadowing(?) related to OCâs health
Thereâs a scene where OC wonders why he hasnât had any asthma attacks lately. So it seems itâs not plot convenience that a sickly & asthmatic child like OC survived that 1 month in that horrible state, but there definitely seems to be a good reason for that. Maybe there was something like
Anyway, I had secretly hoped this chapter would conclude the flashback, and therefore Iâm a little bit sad weâre still stuck with it, but this monthâs chapter was really good and I liked it!! đÂ
EDIT:
Forgot to mention one thing. I think with this chapter we finally got the answer to the question âWhat was OC referring to when he asked Sebastian âYou wouldnât lie to me?â in ch128?â.
I assume OC wanted Sebastian to once again confirm the fact that it is impossible to bring back dead people. And Sebastianâs reply âNo, Sir. Regrettably, I do not tell liesâ
is basically him re-confirming that not even demons can bring dead people back to life.
