This is just some late night musing but you see, we know that shinigamis are created when someone commits suicide, ergo they become a reaper to atone for that sin!
I have spent my whole school career so far in catholic private schools and remember being taught that when God formed the covenant with man when Jesus died on the cross, all souls were granted eternal life. However, someone in class asked how that worked for the people who died before Jesus’ time and my teacher responded by stating that those souls were not just suddenly lifted out of eternal purgatory on the day Jesus died but instead have already been granted eternal life when they died since time is something only humans on earth have and it does not exist for God, so whether or not Jesus would have died a thousand years earlier or later would not have made a difference since his sacrifice was bound to happen, so people before Jesus went up to heaven since time does not exist in heaven, it’s rather a matter of “it’s going to happen/happened” or “it’s not going to happen”, in that case Jesus’ death and the new covenant. I hope you understand what I mean!
Now, what does it have to do with shinigamis? I think we all have noticed that the shinigamis seem a bit futuristic in a couple of aspects, like Ronald Knox’s wrist watch and mower death scythe, also their fashion sense does not seem to be out of the 1800s, so that got me thinking.
Either it’s just random and has no meaning or maybe time per se does not exist in the shinigami realm, meaning they have technology etc that is advanced and let’s say from our time but still operate in the timeline earth is currently in, the same concept à la “it’s bound to happen” (like the creation of the land mower or the wrist watch)
I don’t know, it just made me think and I had to share my thought. What do you think about the shinigamis?
Good theory! Shinigami being ahead in time likely has something to do with their superiority over humanity. They exist between man and God, so it makes sense for them to be ahead of humans in some aspects.
Other than that, scientists or geniuses who committed suicide may be able to resume their research for as long as they exist, resulting in improved technology and the like.
There is also the possibility that they may have some vision of the future, as they seem to be able to foresee death to an extent with their death lists. That way, they have direct access to future technology and let their talented workers work on them (see above).
“A detail from the movie. The reason why the eyes of all shinigamis are “yellowish-green phosphorescence” is because it’s said that “the phosphorus that is contained in the buried bodies turn into ’Onibi’ (aka ‘will-o’-wisp’ in Western world)”. Phosphorus emits yellowish-green light when burnt. All of the shinigamis in Kuroshitsuji are human beings who committed suicide, so that’s why the phosphorus remained in their eyes as a reminder.“
Actually, Yana already explained all this in her past post, so it’s nothing new:
♪ We are the Shinigami Dispatch Society! We keep watch on the scheduled deaths and collect the souls. We must never relax our guard or the hungry demons will snatch them away!♪
