While on Campania, we get a close up look at Ronaldâs watch.
Itâs an interesting timepiece as itâs not only anachronistic, but this is a very expensive watch. Unless Shinigami are paid very well for their work, it would be difficult for him to even afford such a watch. Since we see it so closely, it seems it might be important to his character. So what could this watch say about him?
First off, this watch if very trendy, so it shows that Ronald is fashionable and concerned with his appearance. Heâs not just with the times; heâs ahead of them. He also likes to be noticed as this watch is sure to drawn attention.
Secondly it is, as I said, anachronistic. This could be another hint that the entire shinigami realm is with itâs watches, lawn mowers, and chainsaws. Perhaps their entire realm is outside of time, or maybe it has to do with Ronald himself.
Next, itâs an expensive watch and itâs hard to see how Ronald might be able to afford it. This might mean that he was always someone who attempted to live beyond his means or that he might have been someone who didnât have to be concerned with the price of things. It might also mean that heâs the type to spend his money on something frivolous while having to do without essentials.Â
Lastly, it shows that Ronald is very focused on time – more so than someone like Grell. In fact, while Grell might talk about things taking too long or having to cancel an appointment, she doesnât talk much about time itself. William complains about overtime, but just mutters honestly and does it anyway. Ronald is very concerned with getting things done on time. He does his job well, but heâd really prefer to avoid overtime. He might view his existence like a punishment, and heâs like a prisoner just counting down the days. He simply might be more aware of the passage of time.
Thoughts?
I would have left out the note about the money (from the picture you include); itâs not the cost of the watch. That cost info is about the fee for the water being poured for the Aurora Society members:
However, it is most-definitely anachronistic and probably did cost Ronald a pretty penny. He checks the time often (at least three times during the Campania arc). Here it is again:
And again:
Ludger/Rudgar has a similar, but possibly even newer, watchâŠ. Itâs fancier, at least:
Itâs a Cartier watch. Â That much was noted in one of Ronaldâs character design sheets. Â Theyâre very expensive.
Whoâs to say he didnât just up and steal it from a corpse whose records he was collecting? Â I wouldnât put it past him.
Well, Iâm so glad you knew it was a Cartier. I kept looking at vintage Rolex, since itâs similar. Finally, with the right brand name, I was able to narrow it down to the type.
Turns out itâs a Menâs Pasha de Cartier chronograph:
And, though that note on price is about the 30 pound water, that price range is also about how much one of these babies would set you back these daysâŠ.
Yep, that is what the note on Ronaldâs character sheet saysâPasha of Cartier:
She scribbled out the âruâ so I donât know what is up with thatâŠ.trademark concerns?
Full sheet in case anyone wants it:
So that watch is like what, $10k or so? Â I wish someone could explain how he can afford that and how reaper money works. Â Maybe shinigami just print money at will and they can shop with it in the human realm.
Or maybe Yana just likes drawing fancy watches and thatâs all there is to it. Â Fashion is a big part of this manga and I think some of these things are just there to look pretty.
Took me forever to manually figure out which Cartier he has, but oh well.
Iâm really curious about the note. Is the watch covering something? Itâs my headcanon heâs the one who committed suicide by slashing his wrists, so it would be interesting if there is a scar or bandage underneath the watchâŠ.
Oh, and I also reblogged from myself with the identification of Ludgerâs watchâŠ. Yeah, it makes no sense that they make that much money. Ludgerâs watch wasnât available until 2011 and costs over $100K. I think Yana-san is having fun by giving them fancy, modern accessories.
I think the katakana is ăȘăŒăăŒăăŻăăăžăŒ so like âover technologyâ or like technology beyond the times
I think the hiragana is ăă€ăăŠăă but honestly Iâve never been able to read Yanaâs handwriting
Edit: I just realised it must be that because ä»ăă means to wear so its something like âHeâs wearing a Ca*tier Pasha (over advanced technology)â
@generalvonlily thanks for deciphering that. Â Glad Iâm not the only one who struggles to read Yanaâs handwriting :âD.
