also, i read too much into that dubbed line in a fic i wrote exclusively about james’ trauma, and i framed it as a repressed memory coming back (because why would he take so long to remember when jessie was in so much pain?) and i always thought that headcanon was too over the top for such a comedic scene, but CHECKMATE INSECURITIES I WAS SPOT ON

The best thing to remember about the TRio is that they’re a walking tragicomedy.

Read into it as you like, half the comedy is from theirĀ  less-than-genius moments and the other half is from their quirky personalities which are tragic when read in light of their horrible pasts!

(Kojiro doing that cute fist-thump-into-palm as he recalls the remedy he learned from being frequently subjected to paralyzing poison as a child is so. Casually bringing up childhood trauma and carrying on, without fanfare. It’s just so them.)

http://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/comparisons/chronicles/ep013.html

The Training Daze dub is Unfortunate for so many reasons, obscuring a lot of facts about Kojiro/James and Musashi/Jessie (including references to their pre-established pasts!), but the saddest lost bit to me couldn’t be fixed even with main-series-and-not-Chronicles 4Kids dubbing, because the dub had changed the original motto from the start.

So, you kind of lose the fact that the very first lines of the motto were (very likely) thought up on the spot, by Kojiro waiting for the right dramatic moment to take off those bandages he’s wearing over clothes, while moving freely, and clearly doesn’t need anymore…

When Musashi/Jessie’s wondering aloud to herself, alone again (aside from Nyasu/Meowth, really), as she walks, bitter about her life…

ā€œIs this all that there is?ā€

Even though this time, this time, she actually opened up to her partner, trusted him, and wanted to make this team work, she’s alone again… to add further insult to injury, she had just opened up to him how she had been completely alone up until now (all that moving from foster home to foster home, losing her mother…), with Kojiro admitting he had lived his entire life running away.

Leaning behind a tree, in the same dramatic way they’d often perform the motto together later, he echoes what she says (ā€Nanda kandaā€/ā€This and thatā€ from Musashi’s part of the motto, ā€œIf you ask us about ā€˜this and thatā€™ā€ is a filler word, she’ll usually echo the last thing Satoshi/Ash and friends say when the Rockets are found out! + It’s always followed by Kojiro’s same answer each time…)

ā€œIf you ask us ā€˜is this all that there is?’
Our answer will be the universe’s compassion!ā€œ

Knowing the context he came up with that line, that always seemed random or terribly ironic while they’re committing crimes, it makes it a thousand times sweeter and also provides a really beautiful context for that line, when spoken from him to her in such a desolate situation, and it’s such a shame dub-only watchers miss it! ;_;

ā€œA team mate who won’t run awayā€¦ā€œ I think that’s what she said as she wiped her tears, with her back to them, because she’s so proud, but– there it is.

Someone who had lived his entire life running away found someone he chose not to run away from and someone who had been alone all her life found someone who wouldn’t abandon her.

Oh gosh… He does this again in Ep048 too, before he pulls her into the balloon. This…. This is something he does whenever he wants to be of great comfort to her and remind her she’s not alone… And he does it MULTIPLE TIMES in canon…

I’m going to CRY.

Poor James

i feel so bad for him hes probably in ptsd city but like, the fact that him running in a circle went on for like a solid 5 minutes,

Well, we can’t say it isn’t well-practiced.

there was like a dub throwaway line, i wish i could remember the episode, he said like ā€˜they don’t call me jogging james for nothing!’ or something stupid like that, and it was supposed to be a laugh, and i was just ā€œOH NOā€

Reminder that he was so insistent on staying Musashi’s partner, assuring her he won’t run away from the first formal meeting, even though everyone called her the Reaper/Shinigami Musashi for crushing/leaving behind 12 partners already– because he didn’t want to run away anymore.

I will forever be annoyed with the Training Daze! dub for taking out all his lines about running away because staying by Musashi (and Nyasu)’s side was him taking a drastically different approach to difficulty from what he lived up until this point.
