@bringsyouwings i personally always got the impression that musashi has a really hard time empathizing with people or even sympathizing with them unless she can directly insert herself into their position, and that heavily contests with how much she dislikes appearing vulnerable for too long.

so like even if she’s been in abusive relationships (which i would say is implied), she doesn’t focus on the pain she went through, she focuses on how much stronger she was made and how she survived it! to acknowledge, even to herself, that “i know what you’ve been through because I’ve been through it too,” would make her feel weak and pitiful. so her head basically goes into overdrive to detach her from the situation if its not something she can play up as a testament to strength, and it gives the impression that she either a.) does not care about her friend’s trauma or b.) doesn’t even understand it.

basically, musashi avoids acknowledging any of the pain she’s been through without laughing it off/boasting her tenacity because she’s afraid of being weak, and as such it makes it super hard for her to relate to people who do dwell on their pain and who don’t have the walls and steely grit she has. and if she can’t relate, she can’t really help, because she’s… a little detached from others, all things considered. hard to not be that way when you’ve been alone for so long.

i have no idea if i explained this properly and im sure that about 80% of it is projecting but

I get what you mean! She DEFINITELY doesn’t like pity and sympathy (well, unless she’s in one of her rare “nobody could ever love me because I’m so mean and nasty!!” misery-loves-company moods), BUT YEAH, as a general rule, she likes to try to come off strong and tough as nails because that’s what kept her alive.

I mean, even when she came to save him from the Ghost of Maiden’s Peak, she had to go on this whole rant about how she hates women who cry ove guys who left and how she’d just be like SEE YA, there’s other fish in the sea! And she’s literally firing at a ghostly apparition with a bazooka because he just said he doesn’t want to go.

Yeah, she didn’t save him out of jealousy or inability to let go, but she definitely tries to hide emotions and “weakness.”

(And, of course, the whole Xatu scene you’re quoting on your blog right now! ^^)

It works!

This place is filled with injured Pokémon. If we take all of them, there may be some wheat among the chaff.”
“Even a poor marksman will hit a target with enough shots.” James said with a serious expression.
That was their motto… The words they lived by. Simply put, a phrase that briefly summarises their approach to life.
“I’ve heard that somewhere before…” Ash recalled Professor Oak saying the same thing on the phone earlier.
“A poor marksman… What does that mean?” Ash asked Team Rocket.
“You know they’ll miss, but with enough bullets, one may hit eventually. There’s the occasional fluke in the world. You can’t win the lottery unless you buy a ticket. If there’s nothing to lose, you might as well give it a shot.” James politely explained, reading from a dictionary.
“It’s really the best approach for anything. Whether you’re stealing Pokémon, or searching for a boyfriend or getting married.” Jessie said earnestly, while nodding to herself for some reason.
“So, I’m a poor marksman… I’ve got nothing to lose.” Ash’s shoulders slumped.
It had been thirty minutes since his phone call with Professor Oak, and its meaning finally stabbed him.

between hayashibara being hayashibara and the comedic use of tears after the cloudy weather this absolutely murdered me

i still really need a translation on what kojiro says here because it kinda ****s me up that he mentions rafflesia by name

“Oh, that’s right! Back when I was a child, when I was paralyzed by Rafflesia [Vileplume], Jiiya [Grampy/Pop-Pop] prepared Ashire water herb [Salveyo weed] for me to drink!

You know. Further confirmation that Rumika/Jessiebelle really did used to paralyze him, exactly like he said (“This is just like… the last time…” in Holy Matrimony!), even as a child. I mean, I already knew, but it’s good to have confirmation.

………… but yes, I’ve never seen

Tears, After the Clear Weather/Namida, Nochi hare being used comedically/ironically. Musashi, you drama queen! (I’m just as bad. No, worse, I’ve hit walls, throwing a tantrum because “it’s too hot!!! I feel awful!!!! I can’t sleep!!!!!!” so………….)

also, i read too much into that dubbed line in a fic i wrote exclusively about james’ trauma, and i framed it as a repressed memory coming back (because why would he take so long to remember when jessie was in so much pain?) and i always thought that headcanon was too over the top for such a comedic scene, but CHECKMATE INSECURITIES I WAS SPOT ON

The best thing to remember about the TRio is that they’re a walking tragicomedy.

Read into it as you like, half the comedy is from their  less-than-genius moments and the other half is from their quirky personalities which are tragic when read in light of their horrible pasts!

(Kojiro doing that cute fist-thump-into-palm as he recalls the remedy he learned from being frequently subjected to paralyzing poison as a child is so. Casually bringing up childhood trauma and carrying on, without fanfare. It’s just so them.)
