medusa is a true feminist icon and we should admire her more

You guys realize that she was basically cursed to her fate right?

I fucking hate the interpenetration that Medusa was turned in to a Gorgon after she was raped to protect her.

If Athena had wanted to protect her, she would have turned her in to a monster before Poseidon raped her, or had found a way to stop Poseidon.

I can see Medusa because she is a Rape victim that was blamed for her rape, but whenever feminists bring up Athena I have to wonder if they ever studied Greek Mythology, because they’d never think her as one if they knew about Athena and what a monster she actually was.

mythology moodboards: medusa

“Medusa was beautiful once, so beautiful as to tempt Poseidon. When he came for her, she ran to Athena’s temple thinking that the goddess would protect her. She didn’t. Poseidon took her on the cold floor. She prayed to Athena for comfort but the goddess found nothing but disgust. She made sure no one would ever want Medusa again, one look at the creature she has become would turn any living thing to stone.”

Sorry to break it to you, but Daenerys WAS raped in the books.

Because it bothers theonngreyjoy and I, and because we’re both tired of seeing posts insist the opposite, I’d like to clear the air and make sure we’re not erasing a victim’s trauma.

I like to reblog this every now and then.

Every time I see someone quote the whole “sun and stars and moon and blah, blah, blah" it’s so
unsettling. In the books AND the show Dany is raped, abused, and traumatized.

Daenerys is sold into a marriage with a stronger, older, violent man who has an army of 40,000 other violent, vile men. Age difference aside (which is all I need, really) you’re telling me that’s not a power indifference already? Daenerys COULDN’T say no, even if she wanted to. Between Drogo and Viserys she’s left no alternative (except maybe dying
).

To make it even worse: Drogo saw how much pain she was in. Dany rode for so long she was in immense pain, so much so that she needed help getting off of her horse every night. Yet, despite knowing his wife was in pain, Drogo STILL elected to rape her VIOLENTLY. He listened to her say “no” (maybe) ONE TIME, and that’s supposed to be enough? Consent once doesn’t mean consent always.

And, even if this is “common for the time period!!!” It’s. Still. Fucking. Gross.

It’s not romantic. It’s not “relationship goals”. It’s a relationship based off of fear, rape, power, and abuse. Fuck Khal Drogo.

Sometimes good posts are made by annoying people so I’ll help out

These are Safe Shorts. They were made by Sandra Seilz after someone attempted to rape her. If the fabric is torn, an alarm will be sounded.

image

This is the Rape-aXe, invented by a South African doctor by the name of

Sonnet Ehlers. After interviewing a rape victim who wished she had teeth down there, she made this. If someone’s penis is inserted and pulled back out, the teeth will sink in, and can only be removed by a doctor.

image

The Killer Tampon (couldn’t find a site for it), made by retired anaesthetist Jaap Haumann. When penetration takes place, the sharp end will slice the offending appendage.

image

The Anti-Rape Belt (also couldn’t find a site), made by a group of Swedish teenagers led by Nadja Björk. It requires two hands to undo.

image

Anti-Rape Underwear/Bra (once again), as made by a group of Indian students. Will deliver an electric shock when met with unwanted advances, as well as sounding an alarm.

image

Undercover Colours. Made by 4 male undergraduates at North Carolina U, they change colours when in contact with chemicals or drugs that cause unconsciousness. Used in case you’re wary that your drink has been roofied.

These are just tools to help, but in addition to being mindful of your situations and staying safe, they can help when the worst happens.

Stay safe.

ok, those are all kind of awesome. i wish they weren’t needed, bit still
awesome solutions.

I feel more comfortable reblogging this version

RapeAxe has a gofund me up that barely has 700 dollars. I feel like the inventions that havent even been funded yet should be linked to the page you can support them at.

unexplained-events:

Andrei Chikatilo, a.k.a Butcher of Rostov and Red Ripper, was a Soviet serial killer who sexually assualted and mutalted a minimum of 52 women from the late 70s to 1990. As you have probably guessed, the majority of his murders were committed in the Rostov Oblas of the Russian SFSR.

Chikatilo was a very awkward kid especially around women. He was impotent and once ejaculated while wrestling with his crush. That’s when he says his hatred for women started as they all laughed at him. He went on to become a teacher and had multiple reported sexual assaults on young girls. This only got worse. Sexual assaults then turned into murders as his 1st victim was a 9 year old girl named Yelena.

Chikatilo was finally arrested when Soviet cops found evidence linking him to murders, but according to their law could only hold him for 10 days before they had to either charge him or release him. He gave a full confession of every murder he ever committed. One of the things he confessed to was ripping the victim’s genitals, lips, nipples and tongues with his TEETH.

He was convicted of 52 of the 53 murder charges. Sentenced to death for each of them. The bottom picture is of a severed head of one of his victims used in his trial. He was executed with a single gunshot behind the right ear on Feburary 14.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Gotham, s2e07 and s4e11: It wasn’t always fun.

In which Kristen Kringle is reduced to the status of a bicycle or a beloved sweater.  No dignity, even in death.

P.S. Edward also mutilated her body before ultimately dismembering Kristen, piling her body parts into a trunk, and dumping it in a shallow grave.  And then he killed some poor rando, and threw that guy on top of her.

He also toasted himself while “burying” her.

That’s an excellent point: he reframes her murder as the moment of his ‘rebirth’ or ‘unification’, or whatever the hell he calls it-  Which flies in the face of the argument that he might have killer her accidentally- which he did not.  He’s a scientist and an anatomist, so he knows exactly how much pressure applied to the throat would be fatal.  He wasn’t dissociating when he murdered her, he wasn’t experiencing a delusion or a hallucination- so it wasn’t even “Bad Edward” who physically extinguished her life.  “Bad Edward” only manifested afterwards- as he did when Edward murdered Tom Dougherty and disposed of Tom’s body, possibly experiencing a psychotic break.  In the clumsy pseudo-scientific visual language of Gotham, it’s possible to read “Bad Edward” as nothing more than the externalization of what Edward already knows about himself, that he’s a murderer.
Anyway, any philosophizing about Kristen’s death in the grand scheme of Edward’s narrative arc is asinine, because we saw exactly how it happened.  He told her that he’d killed Tom.  She, not surprisingly, wasn’t thrilled to learn that she’d slept with a murderer, and threatened to tell the police.  What probably sealed Kristen’s fate: her oblique threat of sexual assault (”You’re going to go to jail, and they’re going to do terrible things to you”).  Of all of Edward’s protestations, “I’m not like that” alone seems desperate, genuine.  Maybe one day, the writers will give us some sort of explanation for Edward’s bizarre, painful, destructive relationship to sexuality and gender, but until then- we’re left with the unequivocal image of him strangling a woman half his size to death in her underwear (right after sleeping with her, as though there needed to be a greater connection between sex and death) because she said he was unmanly.

This is my exact issue with his “character development”.

A note on the topic of trauma that I personally found helpful in accepting the idea that I am a trauma victim is that one of the most widely accepted facts in the field of trauma research is that abuse is often not the common factor in whether somebody will develop ptsd.

Many people can go through awful things without developing trauma based disorders as long as they receive compassion and support in processing those events as they happen. The most common factor in developing something like ptsd is emotional neglect. And emotional neglect on it’s own can be enough.

Whatever you went through was enough I promise, you’re not overreacting. Abuse and neglect are traumatic at any level, you don’t need to have gone through the worst possible experience you can think of to develop ptsd. If it hurt you then it hurt you.

..oh.

And to support that, the number one determining factor on how badly something affects a person is how they’re treated afterward, not how objectively bad the event was. They’re called resiliency factors.

It looks like this:

Horrible brutal traumatic event + Family and community support + legal amelioration + closure and therapy and help

ONE MILLION TIMES MORE LIKELY TO RECOVER THAN

Event that the sufferer may think “seems minor” compared to what others have been through + Family neglect and abuse (you deserved it, name calling, support the abuser) + no legal means + denial and stifling and no therapeutic support

I have been raped, I have been abused by someone who was supposed to be family to me, and I have recovered and gotten my life back together. I have psychiatrists, psychologists, best friends, lovers, and family who support me. I did not get legal justice, but I got the person(s) out of my life.

My friend was repeatedly verbally abused by his step-parent, and when he was abused and hurt by others he was blamed for it by that parent. He had no support and no one to talk to about it for over 10 years.

He still feels guilty for even being affected by it and I’ve had long talks with him about how it isn’t “nothing compared to” what I went through.

You are not wrong to be upset. You are not wrong to feel the effects of trauma. Your hurt cannot be measured against anyone else’s. Your resiliency is your own and your situation is valid to you. Perception is everything. The worst thing that ever happened to you might ostensibly be less bad than the worst thing that ever happened to me – but it still is what happened to YOU.
